Hi, I managed to get accepted into medicine in NUIG. I was wondering if a H1 in both bio and chemistry will be enough to enter the five year rather than the six year programme. also if I get placed into the six year course, is there any way to get changed over to the five year course.Thank you.

Congratulations on your success. I definitely think your grades are sufficient to get into the 5 year course and indeed you may be placed on that course. Do be aware that the first year of the 5 year course requires work from the very start as it is like learning a new language in less than a year. Everyone has different backgrounds and reasons for choosing 5 or 6 years course but think about your options carefully.

Update: I only got offered the 6 year course, so a H1 in both biology and chemistry is clearly not enough to gain entry in five year med.

thanks - again congratulations on your place. Clearly I was wrong as I honestly did suspect you would be offered the 5 year programme. There are benefits to the 6 year course even though an extra year. Make the most of your time there and enjoy it- it goes very quickly!!

I'm coming around to the idea and actually I'm OK about the 6 year course. I probably need an extra year to adjust to college before being hit by information overload anyway. Thanks for your input.

Or it may be enough in principle, but the (small) number of places available for direct entry into the 5 year course was exceeded by the number of people with the two, and they ranked by overall points or indeed did a lottery.

It wouldn't be that uncommon for potential med students to have top grades in that particular combo.

You may find you're glad in the end, there are many pros. You don't go straight from the stress of LC into another stressful year. You're not one of a small number of people parachuted into an existing class who know one another well. Instead you get to go in as a normal first year and get to know your group and enjoy the year ... And given premed isn't a huge group, they tend to socialise with one another quite a bit. The friendships / support group that that builds can be invaluable further down the line when you hit the tough years!

The major downside is that it's an extra year's costs.

I actually know people both IRL and from this forum over the years who were offered the 5 year option and turned it down. ;)
