Upgrade to SSD and add Ram or trade in and buy new laptop

I have a Lenovo G510 that's about 3 years old. The headphone jack is dead in it but otherwise everything thing works fine.

    Specs:

Windows 10 (free update from windows 8)
    i7 4700MQ
    4gb ddr3 ram
    1TB HDD
    AMD Radeon HD 8600/8700M

I'm considering either updating the ssd and ram or getting a new laptop.

I upgrade to 8gb of ram and a 275 GB SSD for about €115.

If I was to get a new laptop, I'd be trading mine into laptopsdirect.ie for about £160. And then looking to spend ~560 total.

Any recommendations on what to do? My main use of the laptop is for software development so would have a fair bit of virtualization.

Are you converting the drive bay for HDD use? Dropping to 260GB usable might be tight.

With two SODIMMs and a VM use case I'd lose the current 4GB stick and go straight to 8x2. Allows you to spin up whatever you want. The 4700MQ is plenty for dev works so the only limiting factor will be GPU which you're unlikely to care about.

I would upgrade laptop I had a desktop with core 2 quad 2.5ghz with 8gb ram and basic graphic card 500gb hard drive 7200 rpm and I was running a lot of vms with this with no real issue. Unless you put all your vms on the ssd you won't get performance difference. If you have CD drive you could replace with caddy for hard drive for more storage. 275 GB ssd may not be enough if you have a lot of vms so you may need to go bigger. The 1tb hard drive is also more then likely a 5400rpm so slow access speeds still if you keep vms on this. Keep this in mind.

Hadn't heard about converting the optical drive to a secondary drive slot. Looked it up there and seems pretty cheap to do so will most likely do that.

I'd like to buy 2x8gb but the funds aren't really present at the moment. Might have to stick with just getting an extra 4gb. Thanks for the help guys

Just a few things to note depending on your setup you may not be able to boot from the optical drive bay with hard drive in it also speeds can differ a lot depending on the the laptop hardware or drive bay caddy as some caddies are know to be very slow so cheap ones.
You may just replace your current drive with fresh setup on ssd making sure you have all licence keys and disks for software you may have. Format your 1tb drive and put in optical drive caddy for extra storage would be best giving ssd the most power and speed as possible.
