Ford Focus 2007: Instrument panel gone haywire

OK here's a strange one, I just filled up the car with petrol and rejoining the motorway when all the instrument dials "end-stopped!" the speedo was reading over 240kmh for a while (after it had got back from being off the scale).

By the time I stopped (handbrake on) again it was "less mad" as seen below.

Eventually, after repeatedly turning the key between position 0 & II, it started to read correctly again. Anyone had this happen before and is it an early indication of complete failure?

You should have taken a photo when is was showing 240km/h - you'd have had every guard in the country looking for you!

That's an instrument cluster fault. Solder joins need redoing. I got my fathers done up at a place in greenogue. It wasn't cheap but they fixed the problem. The only other option would be to get a 2nd hand unit.

Thanks, I may have a look if the issue repeats, I have a decent soldering iron (I used to be in the electronics repair industry), yes the symptoms appear to show a bad earth type fault.

I would get it fixed now because the cluster needs to be working properly for the immobiliser to work. If it gets worse you could end up being stranded not being able to start the car.
