Hi, I have a 2009 VW Passet 1.4 petrol. The VW main dealer has told me the timing belt is noisy on start up and needs to be renewed. There is only 120000km
    on the clock.
Is it possible with this low mileage that the timing belt needs changing and how much would it cost?

Yep it can be noisy needing replacing I'm presuming you mean 120,000 km not 1.2 million. How much did the dealer quote you? Get it done before it skips a tooth on startup and wrecks your engine. George Dalton on here does them regularly and will give you a good price.

2009 Passat uses a chain not a belt, chains are intended to last the lifetime of the engine but the chains in those 1.4 Passats well known to wear prematurely and stretch/ break.

Oops it is 120,000km. The dealer said at 1200 -1400 euro. don't know what to do as otherwise it has never given any trouble.

Please don't leave it as your time is getting short and the most dangerous time is your first start of the day. Pm George and he'll give you a price.

One tip while the chain is in that condition, do not leave the car in gear while parked especially uphill. If the engine rotates backwards and then you start it you run a very high possibility of it skipping some teeth and causing lots of damage. Be careful getting quotes make sure genuine parts, or at least good quality parts are being used.

It's hardly driven by the chain.

I doubt he was suggesting it was. Its common procedure to replace the WP while doing a TB or a chain.

I would change the water pump if it's driven by a timing belt, but not with a chain. Common procedure or not, the water pump has nothing to do with the timing chain and can be easily accessed at any time if it needs to be replaced.

If it's driven by it and replacing the pump means taking the belt off then yeah. Otherwise I can't see why you would.

It's basic commonsense to replace a plastic water pump with 80000 miles on it.
If OP is planning on keeping the car (which he sounds like he is) then he'd be smart to get that changed too.

The op doesn't need to change it at the same time as the chain if it's not driven by it. Of it's seperate they can change it whenever they want.

The only reason it's changed with the belt is because it works out cheaper labour wise because if the waterpump were to go down the road it's a belt off job again.

    I know that.

so maybe the advice is to ask the mechanic what he'd charge to replace pump at same time, and if he can do any deal regarding doing the two now?

On my engine the 122 bhp version, the water pump is outside the timing chain area and is driven by the serpentine belt so wouldn't need replacing if I was doing the chain. It does vary with different bhp versions, a quick look under the bonnet and follow a water hose will tell you where the pump lives.

OP, this is a well known issue and VW are not beyond goodwill if the car has a good service history, obviously full VWSH helps. I'd go back to the main dealer (maybe another one), make it clear you know of this issue and push hard for goodwill.
