I've been away from the sport for a long time... And in the meantime some weird stuff has happened... Great Britain are a teir 2 team and there are divisions... I hear that there will be a final in Barcelona... While Ireland are 2nd from bottom of the first division I believe we will qualify for the final... Can we be relegated this year?

I can't believe I've lost touch so much, I once had two clear rounds in the RDS... So like I was obviously very talented... ::jokes::

Now I'm utterly confused... Apparently Ireland have won the European championship... But I don't know the difference between that and the nations cup...

The European Champs are a stand alone competition like the worlds and olympics.

The Nations Cups were once the life blood of Showjumping but the sport has changed.
Global Champions Tour is a privately run group of shows with huge prize money and all in icon locations.
They are where the money is. Top 50 in world rankings get first call on entries.

The FEI with the sponsorship of Longines set up the Nations Cup League ranking a number of shows as 4star. Ie Dublin, Achen, Hickstread, Le Baule etc.
Other Nations shows are level 2.
    The Final is in Barcelona.
The aim is to keep Nation Cup Shows which have been around for years relevent.

British Showjumping has stood still with Michael and John Whitiker and Nick Skelton being around so long. Scott Brash is their top ranked rider but does not ride for the team. The younger generation have never made the break through and unlike so many of the Irish Lads have not gone into Europe to develop.
Their Team being in league to is due them not having the numbers of exeperience pairings to go well at Natins Cup shows while the Top Guys are at Champions Tour Shows.
Ireland when you take Bertram and Dennis out when at GCT shows still have Cian, Cameron Hanley, and many others based in Europe with the experience.
Add in the lads in America hitting Europe for a few weeks when needed and we can have a level1 and level2 team out the same weekend.
Earlier this year Ireland was the Country with the most riders ranked in the Worlds top 100 with 10.It maybe more now.

    Hope this explains a bit
