As the title says I'm in texas during the hurricane. I'm in North texas till tomorrow but then travelling south to San Antonio and galveston and new orleans. I'm gonna look into trying to cancel hotels and book somewhere else in the country. Any American advisors here to advise me how bad those areas might get??

Switch on a TV, they will have up to the minute predictions of the path the storm is predicted to take. Somebody here could respond based on what they saw on CNN last night, the local Texas TV stations are where you need to go for info.

I would certainly cancel. From what i'm seeing on tv (we're in Seattle), Houston and Galveston will be disaster areas for at least a few weeks.

San Antonio wont be much better. even as far north as Austin.

Maybe head for New Orleans? But its going to be wet there.

We're looking at new Orleans weather forecasts and they're saying 100% chance of thunderstorms over the next eight days. Thats going to be Wet. Steamy hot and wet too. Its a beautiful city though.

Where does your flight leave from?

I managed to cancel bookings with no penalties with the exception of 1. I'm back to the drawing board for the next 2 weeks. I'm on amarillo at the moment but am flying out of Chicago.

It's better to be safe than sorry. Was watching it on the telly. There's no guessing what way things will go

I'm in DFW, I would say definitely cancel, reports seem to be that the storm is moving very slowly and is going to dump a huge amount of water on Houston in the next few hours, with potential for serious flooding in San Antonio and even Austin. It seems like it's going to hover around for another while.

Update so we are taking this holiday as an adventure. We went to new mexico and are now in denver. Great spot! Are taking each day one at a time so not sure where we are going next.

Watching telly though on the storm is frightening. Sending prayers and best wishes

Driving west of Denver into the mountains is spectacular and pretty close. You could keep going into Utah too.

Im home a week and just about pulling myself together from what was a fantastic holiday. We left Denver and drove through the rockies and all I can say about that is amazing. We took our time stopping and starting getting out to look at views and wild life. It really was fantastic. We stopped in a place called Cripple Creek a little casino town (random stop). Cool place and we had a bit of craic! We then went to see the royal gorge bridge and had an experience with the GPS getting confused and bringing us down a dirt road with us getting lost, we met a huge flood on the road with loads of horses just drinking the water and me getting the fear of God in me thinking the horses would jump but they passed no heed on us!! We had to reverse a mile back on a seriously bad road before we found somewhere to turn. My husband thought we might have been on a private road. Still we found our way back to the main road and set up the sat nav again. It tried bring us back on the dirt road but we took a chance driving on the main road till we found some signs. I was starting to have texas chainsaw massacre thoughts but we found where we needed to go!!! It was an experience!!!!

As the plan was to go to Nashville and back to Chicago before leaving we headed to a place called Branson. Cool place but not what I expected (I expected country music but there you go). Few bits to do there and good shopping but not sure Id go again!!

Taking it a day at a time was cool and Im glad we weren't near the storm. We loved colorado that much we are hoping to go again next year and take in Wyoming and Montana starting maybe by flying into LA and driving up towards Utah into Montana (Yes Im planning already!!! The only way to go!!!!)
