McGregor fight - Dublin Airport ?

    Hi folks,

I wasn't sure exactly where to ask this but I imagine this forum would be my best bet.

Heading to Spain in the morning, flying at 7. I had hoped to watch the McGregor Mayweather fight but I'm not sure they will show it in either terminal bar. Would anyone happen to know for sure ? Ive certainly see matches and other sports shown in the bars at the airport but would it be a stretch to think they'll show a PPV event ?

    Cheers

I was reading that bars on the Strip in Vegas were charging €150 admission on the night.

It was $99 to get it on PPV in your home, I can't imagine how much they charge the mega casinos to get it.

I guess they'd need it for the Sports book.

    Who are you, his mother?

If people wish to give their thoughts in absolute terms as that poster did, all well and good. They most certainly can be called out on it when it transpires they are talking rubbish.

I was there 2 years ago and it was Superbowl Sunday and there were no cover charges for any of the bars out on the strip. The Owner of the Ri Ra bar in vegas said the UFC always do this for big fights but this was by far the biggest fee they had to charge.

No wonder they called it the money fight

Superbowl is broadcast on network TV (Fox in 2017), it's not a PPV event. If a commercial premises wanted to show the McGregor fight, they had to sign up for the UFC terms and conditions.

in fairness I didn't believe they would show the fight either - it's an airport, wee hours of the morning, breakfast time for many.. last thing I want to see is two people fighting and dozens more shouting at the screen. Given how limited the Dublin Airport facilities are I don't think it was a pleasant experience for most.

That's fair enough, still $150 is a bit on the steep side. I bet it was a shock for a few people but if you spend all that money just to get there whats and extra 150.

+1 that's exactly what occurred to me. Nobody is going to fly all the way to Vegas and not watch the fight somewhere. Captive audience stuck in the middle of the Nevada desert with nowhere to go = ripe for rip-off.

$150 was the charge in our hotel bar during his last fight, needless to say I had better ways to spend that $300....

Nope. I read online that the MGM chain made a deal with Showtime, the 9 MGM hotels in Vegas itself were allowed to exclusively show the fight. No Purchase allowed in other bars.
Entry into those "fan areas" was approx $115-150.
Bars in Boston were charging $20-40.

Who gets the money? The fight promotors? If it's the bar surely they can set their own price or none?

    Massively confused by this!

That's a racket. Article linked explains, fight promoter 'owns' the fight so they impose a minimum charge for venues.

I hadn't read that, the article I read implied no where on the strip could screen it.

Maybe the majority of the bars there did not bother showing it if the price was so high. A lot of the places there have big open areas that are almost on the street so I would guess that they would have had to shut down the more public areas and lose a load of capacity. It was touching 40c there last weekend so the idea of being on a packed bar may not be that attractive.

The whole thing was about making money and nothing else in my opinion. There was no belt on the line and Mayweather was always going to win. I am not a boxing fan but I thought after watching the fight Mayweather could have dropped him whenever he wanted, he never really looked under that much pressure and the other guy had run out of steam by the 4th. Ultimately the 2 guys put on a show and that's what people are paying for.

Setanta ran the same Racket for GAA & 5/6 Nations Rugby in US Pubs for years , Setanta pipe the game into the Bar , Then Setanta send a rep to the bar to collect the $20/person and Setanta got the lot , The Bar got customers during a quiet part of the day. and that was it.
