Has anyone sold their car for scrap or parts? If so did you get much?

Depending on the car if it's just worth the metal you could be talking as low as €50 if they collect it or €150 if you deliver.

No sure if its worth scrapping or selling. There is a issue with the timing belt or gear.

I've done this a few times . I think its €120 per tonne . Find any scrap you can see and throw it in the car as well , because the heavier the better .

The prices being offered for scrap metal, in general, have plummeted lately. Fifty euro is about all you will be offered for most cars.

In that case maybe I should try to sell it. Its a perfect car and had been great up until the timing belt issue. Has anyone sold a care that has a issue with it?

One thing to note - if you are scrapping it, keep the tax disc and get a certificate of destruction.

You can then get a refund of the 'unused' tax.

I walked out of my house this morning and was horrified to find a cars for cash sticker on the windscreen of my beloved 97 Prelude.
Some cheeky f****r had walked into my driveway and stuck it there while I was at work.

Thanks I would have never known. It has a full tank too. It would be a shame to scrap it as it's a really good car.

Anyone know if this is a non-interference engine?

April, has your mechanic diagnosed timing belt failure? Did he give you a ballpark repair cost?

A replacement engine might be cheaper than a repair...

Yes got a quote from a few places all around the same price also from a Nissan dealer. Its the timing belt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 155 ✭✭April1

    That's terrible.

Is it the 1.6 or 1.8 engine? If so, they have a timing chain not a belt. What were the symptoms?

Chain stretch is not as bad as belt failure, the valves and pistons may well be undamaged.

I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable posters here could give you better advice.

Edit: Change the thread title to something like "Nissan Primera engine problem" - you might get more advice then.

The way these cash for cars chancers work is that they will offer you a half generous amount over the phone. When they arrive they will then knock down your car and their offer making you feel like they are doing you a favour.

A 2005 Nissan Primera would have a timing chain rather than a belt. A fully working 12 year old Primera is not worth that much. If the chain has stretched to the point it has damaged the engine then it's worth less than €100 scrap value. The cash for cars guys will probably want you to pay them to take it away.

I should have said timing chain.

I really hope that it doesn't just go for scrap. The car has been great up until the timing chain issue.

Ask your mechanic to recommend someone to take the car away.
Some of those cash for cars operators are not the sort you want around your place.
