Problem with car key or something else?

Hi I have a Nissan almera 04 1.5 and lately when I turn on car nothing happens. When I turn key to first position lights come on on dashboard and key sign comes up and stays solid and can't turn it to next position. If I take out key and put in key again key symbol stays off and I can turn on car no problem. Sometimes everything can be working fine for a day or two and then it happens out of no where and can happen alot .I don't have a second key to check. I brought it to mechanic and typically car worked fine for him and didn't give any problems. He didn't look it over much and said it could be chip in key so he told me to bring it to lock doctor. When I brought it to them they said it's not key cos if it was key car wouldn't work at all and then told me it was the ignition cable without looking at car. He said it was a comon problem with almeras and they could fix it for 250 quid. I was wondering is that how much it would typically cost to change a cable. I'm assuming the lock doctor would charge more than a normal mechanic. And should I get a second opinion or take it to an auto electrician. Car driving fine otherwise. Any advice would be appreciated

Yes it is a common enough failure. The cable from the coil/key reader to the immo box stretches. This can give intermittent problems
As for cheaper at you local mechanic? Go to them and find out

Would that stop the key from turning though?

Annoyingly enough. Nothing happened the weekend and it worked fine. I'd nearly prefer if it just worked or not. Sometimes when I press the unlock button on key not all the doors unlock so it might be a battery problem. Although think someone said to me before that the battery doesn't have anything to do with the starting of the car, just the central locking. Not sure if that's correct. Il just have to keep driving it till it happens more often I guess. And I can pick up a battery for key just to rule it out. Unsure if ignition cable would stop key from turning as colm said. Will let ye know if I get to the bottom of it.
