Corolla battery replacement - odd shape

Have a 2004 Corolla 1.4 petrol with what appears to be the factory fitted battery still in it

It died today after being parked for less than 10 minutes with the headlamps on, ran fine once the breakdown guy jumped it but need to replace the battery sooner rather than later.

There are 2 battery shapes for this Corolla, the usual shaped battery that most cars have and a thinner wider battery, which is the one we've got. Halfords lists both but has neither in stock, Mick's Garage doesn't list the thinner wide battery at all.

What's the best place to go to in West Dublin area to go to for this and is it likely they'll have it in stock anywhere? Thanks.

    The 'normal' type battery:

The 'thinner wider' battery we have:

They fitted both types to that model corolla. You should be able to pick one up an 057 at any motorfactors as it is commonly used in other cars, such as the honda civic and should be readily available.

Brands id reccomend would be gs, yuasa, or bosch. Halfords batteries are expensive at the moment.

Make you check where the + and - poles are on your battery as there is an 053 battery available as well which is the same as the 057 but with the poles the other way around.

Have you tried a few Halfords? 057 is a common fitment.

Halfords website just lists it as unavailable without giving the option to select a branch etc. €90 is a bit much anyway

Cherry Orchard Tyres is handy to me and does Yuasa batteries (I've found them very good on my bikes) so I'll give them a try tomorrow

It's definitely an 057 as the + terminal is at the left front. left rear so it's an 053 apparently

    Thanks.

Halford is expensive with batteries at the moment. I had to get an 0057 a few weeks ago and halfords own brand was €90 and the yuasa silver was €120. I got the same yuasa silver battery in halfords for around €90 last year.

Ended up getting one in the motorfactors for €80

Halfords own brand is Yuasa too. Think the 057 cost me €59 on trade card (not that that helps the OP)

It probably is but the one I got was a yuasa branded silver calcium battery with a 5 year warranty. Halfords battery is a standard lead acid battery and is now the same money as what I paid for the yuasa last year.

Mick's Garage does list 057 batteries after all https://www.micksgarage.com/d/batteries/honda/honda-civic/civic-vii-2001-to-2005/1-4-es4-90-1396/products , just not when searching for a Corolla!

Free delivery but they don't look that cheap and I wouldn't get it until during the week, mrs understandably wants this sorted asap. I can easily fit a battery myself but then I'd be left with the old yoke to dispose of (i.e. hang around in the shed for years until I get around to going to the recycling centre with all the other electronic junk I need to get rid of)

Motor factors would surely take the old one (it's worth money)

I think it could be an 053 you need. Mine takes an 012 but the poles are the same as the 053 the possitive is on the left on my corolla and the negative on the right but the battery is facing backwards so a left positive and a right negative when the battery is facing towords you.

Check the poles before you buy.

Also for an extra €6 the silver5000 battery would be a better bet. It's a better battery and has a longer warranty.

Looks like you're right (which means that both the Halfords and Mick's Garage sites are recommending the wrong battery for me  )

+ is at the left but the terminals are at the rear.

You can just about make out the battery case says 'Panasonic' which I presume is the OEM part fitted to a Japanese built car - did the UK built cars get the more normal shaped batteries?

We bought this (2004) car ten years ago from a Toyota dealer and the dash is MPH so it's a UK/Irish market car.

That voltage reading is with all electrics off after doing 200km on the motorway following the jump start.

I usually check bulbs when buying from online sites and without fail they have been wrong for my last 3 cars. Drop down to your local motor factors and if they give you the wrong battery they'll replace it straight away. Online is good for some things but I've found not for stuff you need immediately or for servicing waiting for 3 days, at best, to get a replacement part isn't much good when your vehicle is immobile.

Sorry I made a mistake in my post above. I meant to say you need a battery with a left negative and right positive(battery facing towords you) that would be an 053.

Non of these cars uk/irish cars were made in japan, the saloon was made in turkey and the hatch was made in the uk. Mines a hatch and has the bigger battery(genuine toyota) but i've seen other hatchbacks fitted with the smaller battery too.

Cherry Orchard sorted me out with a Yuasa for €80 :)

Is 13 years for a battery a record?

It's very good going. I got 12 years out of a panasonic in a honda.
