Hi looking for a combi box which I can get terrestrial Saorview channels and also the FTA channels on 28Deg. Its important that she can get the Digital Aertel so Mheg5 is vital.
Does such a box exist? I have checked the likes of Argos, DID Powercity, but boxes seem thin on the ground.
    Any suggestions or recommendations?

No Not really I want a new box not second hand also the triax that is referenced on the official Saorview site is not available anywhere either are any of the other combo boxes referenced on their site! Is Saorview dying or are just expecting everyone to now buy a new tv with Saorview tuner built in?

The problem is that MHEG5 is only used in UK and here so there are no generic combo boxes available AFAIK. The official Walker Saorview combo is/was the only option.

See as its for my mother she wants to be able to access the Digital Aertel, you know the story teletext is what she turns on for the news, 103, she has survived up to now as Virgin media have left it on the analog channels, but they are turning them off at the end of this month in her area.
maybe a better idea would be two separate boxes one terrestrial saorview and one fta satellite one, does freesat have a digital type text service? and can it be used here or is it geoblocked like iplayer?

Not meaning to be flippant but she could use RTÉ Newsnow, BBC News, Sky News, CNN HD, Bloomberg HD, NHK HD etc etc There are loads of FTA news sources.

Unfortunately there isn't a box like you want as far as I know, the nearest option I can think of is a Nordmende or Walker TV with built in satellite tuner that combines both Saorview and the satellite channels in a single epg. The satellite channels start at 300. I believe they have Aertel also but can't confirm. Can't confirm the actual model numbers.

There was a thread on them a while back, I'll post the link when I find it.

As to your earlier comment about Saorview dying, no it isn't but Aertel is on a countdown clock. Saorview is evolving into a connected service (via internet) combined with the existing terrestrial channels, a satellite combi box is also planned.

Some of the Freesat channels carry a digital text service which can be accesses via the Freesat box, likewise the Saorview approved Walker PVR can be used to access digital aertel. In the UK, the BBC from 2018 are going to start the transition from MHEG-5 services to their connected TV service, Freeview Play.

What area is this? We've seen rumours about this but no one has actually confirmed VM are switching off the analogue channels.

    Clonmel area

What analogue channels were carried in the area? The Dublin cable network carried about 15/17 analogue channels and in Cork the cable carries the 4 traditional channels in analogue.

My mother in law wanted the same. She has two ariva combo 150's. As a work around I added RTE 1 & 2 on astra 28.2, locked to sky. Channel is scrambled.

However the teletext works on them. I then renamed the channels as RTE 1 teletext and RTE 2 teletext.

Heh, was going to suggest the same, after testing it still worked just a while ago!

Not the MHEG5 text, but standard (proper) teletext. :)

Found online article from July this year which mentions this analogue switch off (is it happening anywhere else?):

    https://www.countytipperarychamber.com/news-events-clonmel-chamber/category/virgin-media-announces-free-public-wifi-in-major-digital-upgrade-for-clonmel
In a parallel move, Clonmel’s analogue television service is also being replaced by a digital signal in line with the rest of Europe to enable a wide range of new digital TV services

Anyone still using DVD or VHS to record TV programmes will be put out, as well as viewers using more than one TV on the one connection.

Maybe we can take the Cable TV talk to that forum, at this stage it's in danger of having completely overtaken the thread topic
