    2nd router died this year, rang up and they told me looks like was a surge on the line. Does this sound possible? anyway to prevent this? could i buy a different modem myself

    We've had lightning in the last few days again. Its a modem killer.

    If your phone line is aerial (on poles not underground) and your area had lightning then its very likely to have been that. Otherwise if you've got 658Cs then they're a bit **** and you may as well try and get a 659b out of them.
