Jump starting another vehicle with Ford Focus

Tried to jump start another vehicle with my 2012 Ford Focus yesterday, but as the negative terminal is nearly under the windscreen I could not get the clamp in on it. However there is a thick wire coming out from the negative to the right of the battery which looks like an earthing point.

This is fine if I needed a jump start but can I put the negative clamp to this earthing point coming out from the battery if I was to be the donor to another car?

Yes, that would be fine. Or connect to the engine block.

You can clamp it anywhere on the car body where there is metal exposed on both cars, ie. you don't need to clamp the negative battery terminals on either of the cars.

In fact Ironkiwi it's the correct way to connect jump leads to a car... Connect positive terminals first & then connect negative to clear metal on engine away from battery ... that way any sparks caused connecting leads happen away from car battery (lessens likelihood of explosion from battery gasses)
