Hi all. I have to have a broken tooth removed. Top molar 2nd to last. Dentist, dublin city centre, indicated that unless I fill the gap im asking for trouble long term with the other teeth moving etc. Best option is implant but when all is said and done its going to cost €2,600 to €2,800 which I cant afford. I will call a few more clinics and also look to northern ireland tomorrow but are there other options available? I.e. around europe? are their other alternatives like a false tooth? Any advice would be appreciated!

    Better or cheaper?

    The options are:

    Leave the gap.
    Denture.
    Bridge.
    Implant.

All have advantages, all have disadvantages. The implant is the option which most closely resembles a natural tooth,

Prices vary depending on degree of expertise, location, brand of implant, quality of laboratory. As a general rule, the further east in Europe you travel, the cheaper it is, but you have a minimum 4 visits so take travel cost and time into consideration. The exchange rate is in your favour at the moment but do your research and again factor in travel and time off work.

Thanks davo. Cheaper than €2,800 would be what im after. Didnt realise 4 visits would be needed which most likely rules out europe with flights/hotels etc.

    1. Consult to ensure you can have implant. If you can't then that's the waste of a flight.
    2. Surgery to place implant.
    3. 2-3 months later, impressions.
    4. Fit abutment and crown to implant.

Appointments 1&2 may be on the same day, but as I said, if you can't have an implant you have wasted a trip.
Appointments 3&4 may also be within a week of each other so you could stay, but if the crown isn't right, either its fitted regardless or you have to extend your stay while it's sent back to be altered.

Also be aware, there is a time window when implants can be placed in the molar region of the upper jaw. If placement is delayed, the bone can shrink after the extraction to the point where an implant cannot be placed without risking hitting the sinus. Ideally it should be placed within 2-4 months after extraction assuming bone heals without complication.
