leaving permanent PS job for 12 month gov dept role

    Hi,
I'm in a relatively secure private sector job and am in the process of looking at a government organisation role (lets call it public service)
The opportunity is a good one in that the experience would be good.
However the role is for 12 months initially, that's the contract.

I've quite a problem with leaving something secure for the risk of taking a job that may or may not be made permanent after 12 months. Word is it would be but I can't take that to the bank.

Other than that the salary would only be a small increase.

The carrot is the experience it would get me professionally but then again that's useless if I've no job after a year.

The role has been created to cope with work load.

Thoughts - do these type of jobs get offered regularly in government organisations i.e. 12 months with the possibility that the role becomes permanent after that date, or no ?

Are there possibilities here I'm not aware of (i.e. once in the door the opportunities open up etc) ?

    Thank in advance....

Its hard to say without a bit more clarity as to what you mean by a 'government organisation' - there is a whole world of difference between a civil service post, a public service post, a temporary, consultant-type role etc. and the rules and restrictions on making someone permanent will be completely different in different types of organisations.

No usually they are viewed with a perspective in that from a dept budget the people on short contracts are the ones who can be cut whereas someone permanent is there for life. A lot of roles are extended only up to two years.

Consider why for example significant numbers of young teachers do not get permanent jobs despite schools needing them.

Wouldn't agree. I did a public service job in a government agency that metamorphised from 6 weeks to 2 years and then permanent. Was there for 9 years.
