data protection about past customers

    just seen a bit of a facebook debate about customers of tradesmen looking for references of past customers
    what is the legal situation with this.
    totally hypothetical
    i would guess you would need permission before giving this info and would need to be written and on file.

    If the client was a private individual yes.

    If it was a state organisation or certain type of company (especially utilities), public procurement rules apply and the contract will be int eh public record.

    Some businesses will insist on confidentiality agreements.

    Only if Mary has given you prrmission to say that. She might do so, if you give her a discount.

    What if you leave out the customers name and only give their address, and the work is exterior, like paving or garden work?
