UPS Overcharging and Incorrect VAT

    Hi there,

I received a package from HK valued at 308.30 dollars. The exchange rate stated by UPS on their delivery invoice was 1.15, so 268.09 euro. VAT is 23%, as they stated on their invoice, so this should be 65.81 euro.

They charged me 91.80 VAT, 16.38 Duty (without stating percentage) and 13.00 brokerage, as well as 3.45 VAT on top of all of that, so a total of 126.61....

I sent an email asking for an explanation and to recalculate and refund the fees.

Am I missing something here, anyone else have bad experiences with UPS?

Sorry, those figures don't add up.
    23% VAT on 268.09 is 61.66 for a start. And 91.80 + 16.38 + 13.00 + 3.45 = 124.63: not 126.61.

How much was the shipping on the parcel? you pay vat on that as well.

You sure it isn't a typo and actually 15 brokerage? 3.45 would be 23% of that.

91.8 + 16.38 + 15 + 3.43 would be 126.63. Two cents could possibly be due to rounding if the breakdown and totals were calculated separately.

    Also 23% of 268.09 would be 61.66, not 65.81?
Still looks wrong, their VAT is way too high, unless the delivery was 131.04?!

    That's including postage.

I typed some of those figures wrong but it's off by a couple euro, the point is still the same, that being I was charged way too high for VAT, unless there's some fee I'm not seeing.

The package cost me 308 dollars including postage.

did the invoice in the package show the breakdown of the 308? If it doesnt then ups assume it doesnt include postage and add on what they think it should be.

Ask UPS for a copy of the customs entry. They can accept an invoice which has a CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) value. This would include shipping. But if the invoice doesn't state this, UPS have to add on a value for freight, which is expensive. If you can prove through Paypal statements or whatever, the actual amount paid including freight, you can claim back the overpayment.
