I have a 1985 john deere 2140 bought a year ago but the hydraulics arent great on it ... happens when shes hot or cold but more so when its hot ... say you were spraying and you were letting up the lift she might take a minute of a delay to lift at full revs -back window broke because of this it lifted at a delay while i was spraying and also when she gets hot and u are driving on the road but then you stop for a minute at a stop sign then all hydraulics lock and you have to wait 2 minutes at full revs for them to free again so you can steer .. any advice appreciated

Deere 40 and 50 series have notoriously bad hydraulics from what I have experienced/heard. Had a 3650 myself and the hydraulics and lift were never right with it. After spending a lot on the engine and back end I traded it in the end for a fiat f130. Best decision I ever made. I had a fondness to own a 50 series from seeing them tare around with contractors when I was a young lad and have now ended up turned off Deere for life! It was a real money pit. I heard after that there was a further 4k spend on getting the niggly bits on the hydraulics right but I have no idea what they did.

In your case there could be a simple fix so I assume you will have changed back end oil/filter to ensure that its not just dirty oil clogging valves. If you haven't done this get a mechanic to check the pressure you are putting to your spools. No point in changing the oil first because if you have to go ripping then the oil will need to be changed again.

On a 30 something year old tractor you may also have pumps on the way out.

My advice would be to get a competent JD guy to look at it as a nixer because doing a pile of work based on advice here is going to cost as much or more in the long run. Parts on these machine are expensive (I know!) so it makes sense to get a good mechanic to have a look.

If steering is not right, then get the "steering priority valve" checked first.
It should be the last thing to go.
