    Hello

had a gander on Dublin bus there.
Parents are in Dublin and they want top get from Deansgrange (from the 3158 bus stop number - in front of the Volkswagen garage) to City center (westmoreland st, O'Connell st etc)

It seems they can get the 84 or 84A from this stop but these only seem to go as far as Blackrock.

Any buses directly in to the city centre from here?

Not from there but if you walk upto kill lane you can get the 46A from there to the city.

+1 it's just around the corner from the VW showroom and across the road, beside the library - stop 2057. Tell them to make sure not to get the 75 which goes to Tallaght, just the 46A.

Thanks -- excellent and quick feedback, great forum.

They are pensioners, are pensioners free on Dublin bus ?

Yes if they have the Free Travel Pass (may be included in their Public Service Card).

Thanks, so this bus would have 46A written on the front of it, would it also say "Phoenix park" or would it say something else ? (just to give them more of a hint)

Make sure that they cross the road to be on the side of the supermarket (Aldi? Lidl?) and the library or they will be going the wrong direction.

Besides which, I'd say the OP's folks have sorted themselves out at this stage.

The 45 was changed by Network Direct to let it terminate at Merrion Square. It eventually got scrapped due to a lack of passengers heading into town.

After the 145 was introduced as the high frequency service between Bray and town, the 45 was gradually reduced over the years until it was eventually axed about five years ago and replaced between Bray and Blackrock by the 84/a.

I thought the 145 basically ran the 45 route nowadays. And the 84 used to run the top road. You leave the area for 5 minutes :)

The 145 goes into the city via the N11, people living on Clonkeen Road have no service into town, they can walk to Deansgrange Library and get the 46A or they can get the 84 to Blackrock and then either catch a 4 or 7 bus at the Frascati or walk to the Dart.

The 84x still runs the 'top road' (I assume you mean the N11) though it only serves selected stops. The 45 was a hopeless service, it was very unreliable.

I grew up in Shankill and went to school in clonkeen so got the 45 all the time. I think it is unfair to call it hopeless, maybe it was in later years, but it was pretty reliable back in the 90's.

And the 84 only goes to Blackrock now!!

It was unreliable compared to the 145 is now. The bus was regularly held up in traffic in Cabinteely, Blackrock and Deansgrange compare that to the 145 now where its just a straight run on the n11 from Shankill into town.

I used to live near one of its stops before the 145 was introduced in Cornelscourt but I'd always walk up to the 46a at Foxrock Church if I was going into town as the 45 was just too slow and the 84 was too infrequent.

It might have been a reliable service for going to and coming home from school but in the middle of the day it was a completely useless service because if one departure was cancelled, it meant that you could be waiting on Clonkeen Road or Deansgrange Road for up to an hour for a bus.

Which probably explains why demand tapered off to the extent that DB simply pulled the service altogether - people in the area couldn't be bothered taking the risk that a bus might or might not show up so they just walked to Deansgrange library and got the 46A into town instead.

And RTPI hasn't improved things on that route to any great extent.... I once stood at the VW showroom near the Grange pub waiting for an 84 which was on the system as on its way, having supposedly departed Newcastle 45 minutes previously. Turned out to be a phantom bus so the minutes remaining progressively stepped down but then it disappeared from the system with exactly two minutes to go.

It would be great if there was some sort of bus tracker through google maps app that would pinpoint the exact place of a bus on a map. It would also be great if cancelled buses showed up on rtpi as cancelled rather than just disapering this is a problem espeically on lesser frequent routes where a cancelled bus could delays of over an hour.

All they have to do is not show any bus as moving unless the driver confirms that he has departed from the terminus. The current system assumes that every bus departs on time according to the schedule and if a particular service is cancelled, it needs to be manually pulled from RTPI which clearly doesn't always happen.

    The 145 serves the N11
The 84 and 45 both used to serve Dublin. The 45 got cut and the 84 now terminates at blackrock.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
