Regulatory Affairs jobs with a law degree

Would I be wasting my time pursuing regulatory affairs roles in the pharma sector?

I have a law degree, worked in compliance in financial services.

I am exceptionally keen to pursue a career in this specific field. All roles seem to require a science degree or masters which is obviously understandable.

Has anyone every crossed over to work between both sectors? I have worked in the pharmaceutical sector some time ago albeit in an unrelated role.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

I worked closely with our clinical safety and regulatory affairs depts in a pharmaceutical company in the U.K. All employees in those departments were science or medical background. There was a lot of clinical data and interpretation of clinical results which would be hard to do without a medical/pharmaceutical background. I'm not saying it couidnt be done but it would be unusual. A long way round would be to work as a drug rep first then apply for head office roles but I think you usually need a science background for reps jobs too.

Anyone I know working in RA in pharma or with a HA went one of two routes:

    - Started off in a CRO in pharmacovigilance before moving to pharma with a few years experience.

    - Went straight in as a graduate coming from a pharmacy or PhD background.

Perhaps there are examples of other routes into it but I'm not aware of them.

It's a very specialised field and in the big pharma companies where the global roles are located (usually not in Ireland), internships and graduate programs in RA are very competitive. Probably just as much as the pure research and brand areas.

Local roles in the country level organisation may be slightly easier to come by but they still get enough interest that they can be selective.

Can you tell me little bit more about starting off in a CRP in pharmacovigilance? I am really interested in pursuing a role in this area, and will also study a regulatory affairs qualifications.

I have a law degree with compliance experience in financial services but finding it hard to get medical device/pharma companies in Ireland to find any interest in my applications.

    Cheers in advance

Have you applied for any roles in the last year since your original post? My previous advice to you by PM still stands but if you have more specific questions feel free to get in touch again.
