I might be starting UCD this year and was wondering what sort of electives do people usually take?

Are we offered a list and we just pick or is there some sort of recommended selection?
I was thinking to maybe do a language along my science degree or something.

Hi, I'm also a science student, going into my final year!
For electives, the main criteria is that they fit into your timetable and don't clash with any of your other modules. After that you can choose pretty much anything! In first year I did an anatomy module and a psychology one, in second year I did a nursing elective and cognitive science, and in third year I did German and social justice - So there really is a lot of choice. I do really recommend doing a language through the applied language centre, as from my own experience and from friends who've done French, Italian and Spanish, the modules are very well run. Make sure you choose a language in the applied language centre though, as languages in arts are more about the culture around the language rather than learning to speak and understand the language :)

I recommend doing a language at beginners level too but have a look at your credit requirements and make sure you leave some leeway for doing a handy elective or 2 in final year when it counts!

Have a look at the structured electives UCD offer. They will show on your transcript as a specialisation which I think will be attractive to an employer. It will show you have a deepened knowledge on a particular subject. I think there's about 17 on offer this year - worth checking them out on the current students website. Discovery modules are new too, have a look.
