    Hi,

I'm a 21 year old living in rural Ireland with my parents. I moved back in with them earlier this year and left college due to mental health problems. Now I feel in a better place I want employment in a basic minimum wage kinda deal but where I'm living now there's no chance of anything because it's in the middle of nowhere. I'm looking to move to the town about an hour away from where I live and I think I have a much better chance at a job. The problem is I can't properly look with that distance and have no money to rent a place.

I'm going through the process of going on jobseekers allowance but what I want to know is, if there is any chance of me being able to get rent allowance or some other benefit to help me out because 100 quid a week I can't afford rent and to live in the town. There's information online but I find a bit confusing. Anyone help me out and tell me if I'm entitled to anything?

EDIT: I've been living out of home for 6 months out of the last 12 in private accommodation if that's any help.

To get rent supplement or HAP you first need to get onto on your Local Authority's housing list. Being blunt about it, that's probably a long shot for someone in your situation. But you've nothing to lose by applying.

Your Council's website should have a downloadable Application Form and instructions on it. Be aware that it's a long form, and if you don't provide everything that they ask for, they will simply send it back to you. And where they ask for original copies of documents, they don't mean photocopies!
