New old car registration

    Hi,
A friend of mine has a brand new 15yr old unregistered car. It an MG TF135, circa 2002model. It is totally unused, dry stored with the plastic on the seats, the story goes that car was bought as ex stock after MG collapsed and the dealer was paid to registed it VRT & VAT, but the deal then liwquideated and this moeny was lost, so no registration tax was affectively ever paid.
So now my question was how would you go about registering this car for use & approx how much would it cost ??? the car was purchased for circ 15 K orginally. im not sure of the RRP at time of sale, today i doubt it worth too much except to a real MG buff . My friend would also consider selling or exporing for a collector / buyer

Have you any paperwork for it at all?

If you want to register it here you'd probably be best advised contact Rosslare and explain the situation to them. I've no idea on the basis for vrt or even road tax assessments.

After 15 years however a lot of remedial work will be needed however. Brakes, hoses, seals etc.The engine may even be be seized?

I wonder would the market for that kind of car be in the UK? There'd be a network of car restorers and MG specialists too.

    It might be of interest to a smaller motor museum? Or find a buyer at this next year;

I'm sure there is someone somewhere in the world who would love it. Keep us updated op!

There is the question of who actually owns the car though.

There is some paperwork available, not sure exactly how much, definitely receipts etc, obviously no log book

There'll be VAT also as the vehicle is considered new. All rubber perished and who knows what other work required to get it road legal. Going to cost a lot to get a 15 year old car on the road.

That's an old chestnut that's not always strictly true. I wouldn't buy into that hysteria.

I'd have to agree. No doubt some of the car may have deteriorated with time but a lot of it will be absolutely fine. It needs a timing belt, an oil change and a battery, probably tyres too. The rest I'd play by ear. The whole lot would probably come to less than €1k.

There were a dribble of 'new' MGs registered until 2010 or so from new old stock lying around; I'd imagine mostly by former dealers though. Proof of ownership is going to be the hardest part here - what paperwork is there?

You are joking, engine seized!!!? Id bet it will be fine, especially since it's been dry stored.

    It's a possibility.

As the VRT and motor tax is now based on CO2 emissions, you may be charged the full rates if you don't have sufficient documentation - which is likely considering it wasn't required at the time and the manufacturer no longer exists.

    But also 172 plate :)

They don't meet emissions standards for new cars anyway so I can't see you being abl to do it that way. Maybe if it was registered as a kit car or something.

Just ot note the car runs fine, new tyres & petrol and it'l be good to go, i dont buy into the other excessive preperation stuff.
I thionk the car is listed as 189g/CO2 . Im not saure of the paper work status, what is norally supplied with an unregistered car ???

    VRT manual is here: http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax-professionals/tdm/vehicle-registration-tax/index.aspx

The timing belt interval for these engines are 60k miles or 4 years - I think it would be unwise to leave the original belt in after 15 years, even if it wasn't used. At the end of the day it's just rubber (like the tyres you already replaced).

I wouldn't be leaving fluids in it either. 15 year old old sitting in an engine isn't what I'd have in anything I owned. Same with coolant and brake fluid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,473 ✭✭✭Notch000

That not a big job in fairness, but in a sealed system they should still be ok, coolant is pint and brake fluid is still V clear

Coolant and brake fluid should be fine. The oil id definitely get changed though.
