    Hi all,

Need a bit of help. My boyfriend recently bought a Seat Ibiza car/van. The car was advertised that the tax was around 190e for the year. However when my boyfriend went to tax the vehicle he was told that the tax was calculated on engine size not emissions. To tax the vehicle privately it is over 400e for the year. The vehicle is a 1.4 diesel. The point is the dealer advertised the vehicle at a different tax band so my boyfriend bought it under false pretenses. If he had known the tax was this high he would not have purchased the vehicle. I looked this up online and it says on the CCPC website it is an offense to sell a vehicle under false pretense. Can anyone help me with this as his tax is due next week and the garage are refusing to help . They also sold the vehicle without a second key which he did not know about until the vehicle was bought and inquired about it. Thanks.

You can check the rates here - https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/menu.do?page=motortaxrates

What is on the current disc?

It's 413e for the year. The tax office said to insure a commercial privately it goes on engine size and it falls into the 1.5 bracket . There was no previous tax disc on it from the previous owner to see what they paid. The dealer advertised the vehicle as 190e for the year. That was the only reason he bought it because the tax was lower that his old car.

In the OP the tax is out next week, in this post it wasn't taxed. If you can find the ad you might have a chance to get a refund otherwise it'll your word against the garage. Perhaps the garage did the same as you and assumed that the tax was CO2 based and not cc.

Is the lower rate commercial tax, whereas the OP's boyfriend needs to insure it privately? Not much you can do there really as most vans would be bought/used by tradesmen. Plus to be honest, why didn't he check all this out himself first?

In any case, €190 vs €413 isn't that much of a difference over a year. What was he paying on his old car? I'd bet he's still saving if it was a key reason for changing in the first place.

If vehicle is a van (only 2 seats) then there's no possibly of tax on it being €190.
Dealer advertising it with such motortax price was making false advertising.

Surely he should have looked into it himself when considering the car to see what the running costs would be? Also why would he buy a car purely based on the tax? What about the practicality, reliability, fuel economy, insurance etc...

    It's all quite irrelevant.
Dealer advertising car for sale as having tax of €190 which is not the case, is wrong.

if its insured privately you tax it as a private car insured commercial taxed as a commercial
buying a car for cheap tax is a JOKE
