Gum Infection - Dentist or GP?

I've a gum infection at side of my mouth, above wisdom tooth which hasn't come up yet. (White spots, almost sure it's infected. Tooth has loadsa space to come up, it's not cutting, and very deep in the gum so doubt it needs to come out, yet anyway).

Anyway, could I go to a doctor to get antibiotics etc for the infection? Or will I be just sent to dentist. I can see doctor asap, I can't get an appointment with my dentist until wednesday (work/distance issues). It's fairly sore, affecting my sleep, want it dealt with asap.

Dentist - if its urgent book it with someone else, work will understand if its as serious as you say

Thanks. I'm stuck fairly rigid to going to one dentist because of small phobia so hence why I was wondering if GP could describe.

Both can prescribe antibiotics but go to dentist as GP will tell you to do that anyway and in the long run it's a better option to resolve the problem.

    Thanks all.

On the solpadeine already, settled it but no better really. Was hoping I could go docs out of handiness and price, absolute no chance I can get an appointment with my dentist til Wednesday earliest. Wary with new dentists, more money, bit of a phobia, but guess I'll have to find a local one who'll take a look.

Out of curiousity, will they just have a look, tell me what needs to be done, and write a prescription if needs be?
