My cousin dropped in to me this morning to get the codes read on is diesel 508, as engine fault get repaired warning had come up on the dash. I plugged in diagbox and it threw back the following:
P16b1 piloted flaps are jammed closed or stuck in an intermediate position. Anyone any ideas what this is? What are the piloted flaps? Google has been no help.

i'd be guessing but think it might be Peugeot's version of swirl flaps in the intake manifold?

    Thanks for that.

We are still none the wiser, but we now think it might be a bad injector. Will probably need see a specialist since we can't pin it down.

should be an easy one for a mechanic to diagnose

    @oppenheimer1
You don't mention what year/engine 508 you have..??
The following is description of a fault code P16B1 based on the 2.0 Hdi 508.

MOUNTING DELPHI AND EMISSION CONTROL EURO 5 (ENGINE)
Engine ECU DELPHI DCM 3.4 branch 2

    Fault code P16B1
After sales description of the fault code Controlled air inlet module : Flaps
    jammed shut or other failures
Description of the diagnostics Flaps jammed shut or in the intermediate position
Conditions of activation of the diagnostics Not calibrated
Conditions of disappearance of the fault Start the actuator tests
Down-grade modes if fault present Deactivation of the air conditioning
Cutting of the exhaust heat saver function
Request for opening the piloted flaps (Controlled air inlet)
Switching on of the warning lamp and/or warning message "SERVICE" warning lamp
Main customer complaints likely Engine overheating with illumination of the engine coolant temperature indicator light
    Suspect areas Piloted flap motor
    Piloted flaps
    Configuring the engine management ECU

Hi Row, thanks for all that. He has a 2.0 HDI, year 2012, 140bhp.
The car isn't running rough or cutting into limp mode, no overheating either. He says the fault appeared whilst driving at constant speed on the motorway on Monday. The fault on the dash cleared itself but returned again yesterday after he had to take the car out for an hour. Diagbox describes the fault as intermittent.

He said he hit a small animal (jack Russell sized) at full motorway speed about a week ago and he thinks it's more than a coincidence as it is the first trouble he's had with the car. What I'm getting from the above is that the air intake flaps are probably damaged? You hardly have any idea where these flaps are located?

    No Problem oppenheimer1,
I haven't come across this fault before but sounds like the inlet flaps but dont see why they would cause the engine to over heat.
If you pm me the vin number i can have alook for they flaps on servicebox..:)

Just to follow up on this, I hate when people leave problem threads hanging. We inspected the lower front bumper area again and noticed a set of louvred slats in front of the lower radiator. My guess is these shutters are closed until the car gets up to temp to help it to heat up faster. Anyway, the impact with the dog had knocked two of the 8 slats out of their housing, but hadn't broken them. This prevented them from opening.

A bit of effort and some sore fingers later saw the slats popped back into their housing. While we are not 100% sure this will solve the issue (the motors and other hidden parts could also be damaged), it's at least a step in the right direction.

He's going to monitor the issue on the next long drive and hopefully it won't arise again.

    Hi oppenheimer1,
You seem to hit the nail on the head with this one..:)

There is an Air intake module on this 508 which is in behind the front bumper so hopefully your repair will sort it.

If not then i have attached a diagram/part numbers of the module if you need to replace it in the future.

Knowledgeable as ever! Thanks Row :)
I'll heat in a few days no doubt if his dash is beeping again!
