Exhaust leak = high idle + lambda fail

My e36 failed the test last week on an exhaust leak at the back of the silencer. The lambda reading came in at 1.04 (upper limit being 1.03)
Tester advised me this is due to the leak and once solved, that will return to normal.
Question is, is a high idle speed related to the exhaust leak? It's running at around 1200rpm when warmed up and also failed on that because its 10% above spec. If the exhaust solves all these issues, I don't want to mess about with anything else obviously.

    Thanks lads

No if the leak is after your own lambda sensor then it will have no effect

    Yep.

Got exhaust repaired and still and no change. No other obvious leak before the sensor that i can see so may try a new sensor.

Would you not consider bringing the car somewhere equipped to do some proper testing to diagnose what the problem actually is.

It may work out cheaper than buying a new sensor that may not be needed.

It's more likely that there's an intake manifold leak.

Unmetered air will leak in after the MAF, which will in turn cause increased idle rpm and cause the lean condition seen.

Can be MAF, Lamdba, temp sensor, cat, leak, manifold, gasket, fuel pump, fuel regulator, gasket, air filter, engine oil, fuel filter... generally anything that determines how fuel/air and at what ratio these should be mixed.. its a total ****ing torture.. take to a guy thay does emission diagnostics. Or have a look at odb2 reading and might help you indicate problem with live data feed
