Hi everyone, am trying to decide what car to look for. I want a petrol, front wheel drive, saloon, perhaps 1 or 2 years old, preferably European, budget 25 - 32 - i like the look of Volvo s60, Mercedes C class. But i think they may be not availabe as petrol or fwd. Live in Donegal, often have snow, icy roads: so am reluctant to go for rwd. Presently drive a 10 year old Seat Leon 2 young children, need a bit more space, though preferably not an estate. Any suggestions that I could look at, thanks.

Volvo S60 and Merc C Class are not exactly spacious in the inside. If you want something with more space then look at the likes of the VW Passat, Ford Mondeo, etc.

Ok thanks for suggestions, I will have a look at those. And I don't need anything too spacious, just fancy a saloon instead of a hatchback :)

You might also want to consider changing to winter tyres during the winter/spring months for better grip on snow and ice no matter which axle drives the car.

Thanks for that. Have just googled Winter Tyres and they do sound like a good idea.

The Renault Grand Coupe saloon is a lovely looking car and you could well afford one but it would have to be diesel because for some reason they don't have a petrol version even do the hatchback has.

    The Opel Astra

    New Opel Insignia and

The Mazda 3 saloon are others you could try.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Would you not be better looking at some of the smaller SUV's like the Hyundai Tuscon, Renault Kadjar type cars? If as you say you face regular ice/snow it might be something to consider. Your budget probably gives plenty of scope too.

I cannot see how a Tucson, Kadjar and the likes will be any better in snow or ice given all they are is jumped up hatchbacks. A set of winter tyres would be more useful.

Unfortunately alot of the european luxury cars are RWD so narrows down your choices alot... Very hard to get a bigger newish sized car is petrol everyone went diesel mad for the past few years!

One to consider would be a top spec mondeo one of the nicer looking 'ordinary' family cars especially in the lastest model and would be more practical and affordable for a family found a brand new ST example with 2.0 petrol engine for 30k! Would rather a top spec everyday car than a base spec luxury one.

RWD BMW, Mercedes ect sold all over the world, winter won't be a problem with the correct tyres.

I can't see any connection between snow/ice and being reluctant to going for rwd.

They'll provide very similar acceleration abilities as fwd.
If your worried about rear of the car skidding on bends due to tyres on the rear axle slipping on the surface f.e. due to too much power, then surely that's not a problem at all with esp/traction control in every modern car.

If you often plan to drive if very deep fresh snow, then 4wd would be very beneficial, but I can't imagine such snow in Ireland, even in Donegal.

If you consider second hand there may be petrol Audi Quattro cars about, may be worth a spin over the border.
