Volunteering - Minimum Commitment Required

    Hi all,

I am just finished my undergraduate and have opted to take a year out. I feel that volunteering could be a good idea for the remainder of 2017, as I have not volunteered previously and would like to gain experience in areas related to my discipline. Not only that, but I think it would be great to give something back to others and it's something I've wanted to do for some time. Ideally, I would hope to work full-time from January as I need to earn money before starting a PhD in September 2018.

I have looked at several volunteering posts, but they all require a commitment of 12 months and in some cases 18 months. I would love to volunteer for a full year, though that is not financially viable. While I absolutely would have no problem committing an two hours a week to an organisation, I am wary that the times would clash if I obtained a full-time job. Could anyone recommend volunteering positions that would require a shorter time commitment? Should I apply for these positions in the knowledge that I may be forced to leave the positions (though hopefully not) if I find a job next year?

What area are you looking to volunteer in?

A position related to mental health would be my first choice since I study psychology, though I would definitely be open to trying other positions. I would really like to work with a group a such as the homeless, or those from disadvantaged areas. As part of my co-op placement, I taught English to a class of fifteen adults that had recently entered the county and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I would certainly be open to running a class like that again.
