I just purchased a vehicle history report from <snip> it was a waste of my money. The report didn't have mileage data. What good is it then. I've asked them for a full refund but didn't get any reply.
    If I was you I wouldn't bother!
Ye can agree or disagree but stay away from <snip> !!!

How much are you spending on the car v how much you spent on a history report? That should be your answer.

Did they say from the outset that they would provide the milage?

They (all the companies offering this service) do make the impression, or suggest that everything will be on the report, while in reality some information is either incorrect or missing ;)

It isn't their fault, but they don't advertise the fact (except the small print).

    An example below:

    Another example (Customer review:D):
    How we help consumers…
XXX found problems no mechanic could find. When I went back to the seller and told him I’d done a XXX check his face dropped. He knew there was no hiding or trying to pull the wool over my eyes.

Their sample reports include mileage information, too.

Now, to be clear, I would never consider it a false advertising, nor I suggest that the OP should get the money back.

The reports are poor value, though, as it is really a finance check etc that is important. They won't prevent you from buying a lemon, and they definitely do not prevent you from buying a clocked car.

In their defense, the information they hold is full of errors due to garages etc typing in mileage incorrectly. Not entirely their fault.

No need to avoid, there are many reason for the mileage not recorded guys. If the car is two years old for example there wouldn't be a record anywhere very likely.

There should be a stamped service book, though.

I'd say if you want to avoid, then avoid all of them companies as they all work on similar principles.
They can only get mileage data if someone on some garage at some stage decided to note it and share it

I'd agree with that. A new-ish car may have no records of mileage if it's had no workshop visits. The history company cant get you records that aren't there, no matter which of the many history check companies you choose.

At the same time, if there's no records then that in itself poses a question. If a car is say 2 years old and there are no records? It should have had 2x workshop visits for servicing that you would hope would be in the main dealer. If there's no records it either hasn't been serviced or it's been serviced at quite possibly a very low level. So no records won't help you verify the mileage but it will arm you with another set of questions to ask.
