Apple Watch buyer regret?

Going to be in US soon and was thinking of getting an Apple Watch. They still seem relatively uncommon here.

For those who have one are you really happy with it or do you regret the spend?

Is it worth the extra cash for series 2. Does it scratch easily?

I have a 2 Apple Watch, it's fantastic. But it's not necessary like a phone so its marmite, you either love it or hate it.

I too bought one in the US - soon after it launched in fact.

I quite enjoy it - rely on it for telling the time (duh), reading texts, setting reminders via Siri ("take out the pizza in 5 minutes"), seeing my health & fitness stats, and seeing what weather outside temp it is.

Other than that, I don't use it for much more. I'd say everyone finds out their ideal use for it - just don't be upset if it doesn't suit your every use.

How are you buying - use Revolut?

Its really when you don't have it or sell it off that you really miss it.
I'm trying to be strong and hold out for another month for the series 3..if it launches.

I’ve mine almost 2 years now, series 0. Honestly, it’s great for particular uses - I use it for tracking cycling/exercise and having it for notifications is handy. It also unlocks my mac which again is handy.

No one really “needs” it, it’s more of a nice to have that augments the phone. I very rarely open apps on it. I’ve heard lots of reports of poor batteries at this age, but I took mine off charge at 6am and it’s now at 44%, including tracking 2 hrs of cycling today. Not bad for a 2yo Apple product.

If you have the cash, treat yourself. If you’re scraping together every last penny for it, I’d advise against. It’s not going to completely change your life, but it’s still a great product imo.

And to answer your scratch question, I’m not overly careful with mine. It’s taken a few knocks and bangs here and there but it’s still scratch free

Just with my Irish credit card I guess. I haven't used revolut before.

Well yeah I was wondering if September would be the worst possible time to buy it.

I saw on Bargains alert the Nike version being discounted so wonder if that's a sign of a new one.

If series 3 comes out then, it could be a great time to buy a series 1 or 2. I have a series 1, and it's great. I didn't need the built in GPS and swimming-proof features of the 2, so I went for the 1 last Xmas. From what I've read, Series 3 will have 4G built in, and again, that's not a feature I'd want or need. I'd imagine that will need its own data plan. Everyone will have different needs, but if I had to buy one again in the next few months, I'd happily go for a Series 1 again. It has enough going for it for my uses. And it will probably have a price drop if Series 3 comes along.

On a purchase of that magnitude, you could really save a bit by using Revolut. And apparently revolut will support Apple Pay this year, so you'll be able to put it to use in the Apple Watch soon ;-)

Thinking about it, I bought the dark aluminium sports watch, 38mm. Basically cheapest one could get, but all black. I regret the black one - I should have gone for the lighter aluminium finish. That way, I could buy a leather strap that would look elegant with it.
Happy though with the size - I find it quite ridiculous to see so many people with oversized watches that aren't proportional to their arms...

I have series one and at first had regret.

Now I love it, daily activity, apple pay, siri, Mac Unlock, wallet passes for cinema etc

Handy for notifications when on the move

Still to use it as a boarding card.

Used mine as a boarding card a couple of times in June. It was very cool. :)

I got mine about a year after launch and sold it probably 9 months after that. I just found myself getting annoyed by it. I still found myself replying to everything via the phone so it was a bit pointless that way.

I liked being able to change my music without taking my phone out of my bag, that's probably what I miss the most.

I've had my watch since launch. I love it. In saying that I wouldn't get another one unless there as a significant change in design.

Bought it as a pure luxury, love it! It even unlocks my MacBook! :D

Had one...sold it after about a year and now regret selling it. Going to the US myself in a few weeks and strongly thinking of picking up another one..

They're very common at work, everybody seems to have one. I can't stand notifications, so not for me..

Make sure you get AppleCare with one, to fix anything outside of the warranty is the price of the watch

Will it work with my OPO and Asus laptop with Linux on it? :p

Does it scratch easily? No, it goes directly into smashed mode

Like the iphones, there is no second chances.

Mine has a scratch on it. In fairness, I have zero mechanical sympathy.

I have the gen 1 only 2 days and it got some slight scuffs on it..at first I thought it was my jumper doing it until I realised that as I pushed through doors I was leaving my left hand behind me and it was slapping off the door ie the watch..otherwise all good.

After much consideration I bought the series 1 which I wear swimming with no problems at all. I didn't need GPS in the watch as always have the phone with me for that. I love it - notifications, health, telling siri to skip tracks while playing music in the car and driving, boarding passes, apple pay, telling the time/stopwatch/timer/alarms... Need? no. Handy/useful - yes :)

I've an Apple Watch first gen (or series 0 as people also like to call it). I feel weird and lost when I don't wear it.

    Pros:
    * Notifications to the watch are great.
    * Cinema tickets and Airline passes on the wrist are great.
    * Apple Pay on the wrist is good, but no transaction history (from what I can see) is a bummer.
    * Being able to set timers for cooking and stuff are great.
    * Being able to control currently playing music and volume to the AirPods is great.
    * Directions on the watch is surprisingly good especially in cities you don't know and don't want the phone out in your hand.

    Cons:
    * No GPS in my Series 0.
    * Apps are pretty useless, complications are the best part.
    * I find the thickness a little too out of whack with the diameter even on the 42mm, if it was a couple of mm thinner that'd be nice (Series 2 actually got thicker which was odd for Apple).
    * Changing straps as easy as it is, is something I never do, I bought 3 sport bands in different colours and a black Milanese, and the Milanese is all I use.
    * The Sport - or Aluminium watches - use ion-x glass, which is stronger than most typical glass but mine is pretty scratched, mainly from the Milanese loop as I've not been careful with it putting it on to my 12South stand. The sapphire front glass is meant to be much better, but there's trade offs in the watch is heavier and the tapic taps feel different.

Some here mentioned they don't like notifications on their wrist but I bet they haven't triaged what goes to the watch and what doesn't. I'm pretty ruthless in what pings my watch and what doesn't here's a list:

iMessage, email from VIPs, notifications from BA, TripIt! and phone calls goes to my watch.
everything else including WhatsApp, messenger goes to my phone.

I get maybe four or five notifications per day to the watch and the rest wait for me on the phone for when I want to view them.

All in all I'll be buying a Series 3 when and if they come out, I'll be getting the Steel or Ceramic option maybe. But if I was buying now, I'd got Series 2 or nothing.

It's pretty good. Not amazing, but good.

The notifications are still too limited and the apps are pretty much rubbish.

Spot on advice - I had to do the same.
Back when I drove, I found it dangerously distracting when WhatsApp kept popping up, to see lads talking about 5-a-side...

Even without driving; the ferocity of which notifications come in from group chats are crazy. iMessage for me is mostly 1 or 2 people at most and they wouldn't text all at once so it keeps the pace down.

I love mine, I’ve had the s1 and the s2.

I have the gold aluminium gold s2 with a brown sports band and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

The s2 is so much better than the s1, the battery life is almost double of the s1 in my experience.

Have a Series 1 and wouldn't be without it. Use it primarily for notifications including news, baseball scores, cricket updates and messages from WhatsApp etc.

I also use it for controlling podcasts, weather updates from Dark Sky and use Apple Pay all the time.

A fantastic device and if I lost/broke mine, I would replace it without hesitation.

you mean the Series 0. Thats the original.
If anything the series 1 battery life is better than the series 2 (both launched same time) since it doesn't have GPS but everything else is identical afaik

I have the original now for about 2 years and i still love it. I have a nice collection of ordinary watches but haven't worn most of them since I got the apple watch.

I've tried a load of different straps and the Milanese Loop is by far and away the most comfortable.

Thanks all. Now just have the dilemma of potentially a new Watch being announced on sept 12.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,473 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

have a mate with the series 2 steel version who will be upgrading.
So I can buy that on the cheap or get the new steel one for about €300 more...
    decisions decisions.

Definitely wait a few days until the September 12 event, even though the new version is only supposed to add 4G connectivity they could drop the prices of the previous versions.

It is a great device for notifications and fitness tracking, otherwise not much use.

yeah I had the original and the series 2...now that they're gone I really miss them. Note Applecare is a must for the watch...any screen damage whatsoever is practically the cost of a replacement watch give or take €50. So break your fancy series 3 watch and you're looking at €400+ to replace it.
