    folks,

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, I am not sure where the right one is !

Our Grey bin stinks and has a huge amount of flies and maggots in it about a week after we empty it each time.

I then have to go an wash it out with power hose and bleach but the smell generally remains.

The smell can be got from 20 feet away, and the bluebottles make the whole area disgusting !

Any idea what we might be putting in our bins to cause this ?

    Thanks
    Rob

I'd start with food. Especially if you put it in without a bag. I know some people like to empty straight into the bin.
Any nappy wearers in your house?
Make sure everything is well wrapped in bin liners.

How often does it get collected?

its all put in in bin liners, although not fully sealed. No nappy wearers - its mostly just food and empty food cartons

I think the problem may be because the bags aren't sealed. if you tie up the bin bags before putting them into the large grey bin. At least that would be sealing the food off and the flies and maggots wouldn't be able to produce. Also hose it out or put some jeyes fluid on it after it's been collected

If washing with Jeyes fluid or similar doesn't get rid of the smell you could contact your waste collection company to have it replaced.
If there's any damage or excessive wear and tear they replace FOC.

Thanks, the bin is fairly new, its more to do with something we are putting in it regularly as when I wash it out its fine till the rubbish starts to rot again.

My colleague reckons it could be egg shells - but where do the maggots come from?

Eggshells do not attract flies. There are no flies in my compost bin and I throw crushed eggshells in all the time. Ditto fruit and veg. skins and cuttings.

Maggots hatch from flies eggs which in a domestic bin are laid in meat waste, it has to be be rotting meat in your bin. Have you considered meat waste in takeaway cartons that the family chuck in the bin?

try washing all the cartons before binning them.
