Rapidly gaining weight

    Can anyone help me,I'm rapidly gaining weight like 3 stone since January,how can I even start to lose it? Running? Anyone help? I'm beginning to panic here

    Hi Op

    gaining weight - could be mnny things.

    1st thing - get a check up with GP. rule that side of things out. Seriously if you only do 1 thing, do this.

    Assuming its not medical perhaps you can look at it like an equation calories in = calories used
    If you gained that much weight that quickly - there may be a serious imbalance in what you consume vs what you used.

    If you don't know what the reason is you should keep a food diary, of every single thing that passes your mouth, eg if you eat 1 biscuit you record it. reading it back the next day may help you see whats going on.

    why might that be? have you recently stopped exercising, or changed role in your job to a more sedentary role?

    I second what Xterminator says. Get the blood tests done. My FitnessPal is a great way to realistically track your food intake/calories as long as you're diligent about recording everything!

    Have you made any lifestyle changes this year that could be the reason you've gained weight? Have you gotten into bad eating habits; snacking more, bigger portions etc? Are you exercising less?

    If so, it could be as simple as going back to whatever you were doing before.

    If there have been no obvious changes though, I agree that you should go to your GP.

    OP I went through a period of gaining weight, not quite that quickly, but quick enough. I'd again echo the getting blood tests done to ensure it's not a thyroid issue or something like that.

    Also the food diary but be very honest with it. Every little thing that passes your lips should be documented. Try it for a week to see are you eating without thinking at times.

    Are you in a relationship? I found I increased my portion sizes to the same as my OH at the start of ours and it led to a weight gain for me as I always would have eaten less. Going out for a lot of lunches/dinners was another factor.

    Has your movement reduced in the past few months due to injury? If you were someone who was regularly doing sports and eating to fulfill that lifestyle but are injured and still eating the same, it could lead to a quick weight gain.

    OP there's a saying that goes "you can't outrun a bad diet". So even though there are many benefits to running, cycling etc. it's not going to solve your weight gain problems if you're eating too much of the wrong things.

    1) Go to a doctor. Make sure there's no medical issues.

    2) If there aren't any medical issues, sit down and look at your diet. Take out any unhealthy stuff you eat a lot of. Buy smaller bowls and smaller plates, use these when you're making food. It'll encourage portion control. Don't get fast food. Drink more water.

    3) Exercise. Download Couch25K (or whatever app of your choice) - these are apps designed for people with a low level of exercise. You start off slowly and over a period of X weeks (it differs, the one I used was 9 weeks), you'll be able to run for 30 minutes or 5KM without stopping. Go swimming. Join a gym.

    Two is arguably more important than 3, because if you do a lot of exercise, but don't adjust your diet it'll essentially amount to nothing. Someone once told me: "muscle is gained in the gym. Fat is lost in the kitchen".

    3 stone in 7 - 8 months is a worrying amount. You really need to curb whatever bad habits you've picked up before it starts affecting your health.

    See a doctor.

    Forget diet or exercise or thinking about bad habits etc until after you've seen a doctor, hormonal changes or medication or thyroid issues can make you gain weight, slow your metabolism and created food cravings so you could look at your diet and think you're eating junk but it's caused by something else.

    If the doctor says everything is fine after blood tests then look at your diet but please go to the doctor first.

    OP see a doctor and get a full range of thyroid tests and a good overall check up. Unless you're chained to the couch eating rubbish all day putting on 3 stone in such a short period of time is worrying.
