I've been off on illness benefit for over 5 months now. Previous to this i was on injury benefit. I may be returning to work in the coming weeks. I've been told by others that I won't have to pay tax for the rest of the year, is there any truth in this ? Thanks

Depends on your earnings. You can earn €16500 a year without having an income tax liability, €12012 for USC and prsi is a weekly threshold.

Illness benefit is a taxable source of income, are you likely to go over 16500 for the 12 months January to December when you add your salary and illness benefit together?

Read my previous reply! If you go over €12012 you will pay at least USC. If your weekly is over prsi threshold you will pay etc. Illness benefit is taxable by the way.

You start to pay USC at €12,012 , but if you earn less than €13,000 you are exempt from USC in 2017
