Best Calf dehorner?

Just out of curiosity, wondering what ye all use to dehorn?

The other half's birthday is coming up and thinking of getting him a new method for dehorning the calves :p:p:p

He's currently using an electric one but has complained several times how it doesn't seem to get as good a heat as it used to. I'm usually the spray holder/sprayer so it seems like the lead of the electric one gets in his way and is more of a tripping hazard than anything!

So can anyone recommend the one they think is best? was thinking of going gas, but which one is the question ?

    was looking at this one;

    https://www.agridirect.ie/product/express-gas-dehorner-with-20mm-head

    Any comments are appreciated!
    Cheers!! :)

I use the one you have in the link and find it fantastic. Great heat and there is a good weight to it too.

The best dehorner is a polled bull :p

Used that this year, was using one onto gas drum. Way more heat from this. Used always have a few that would grow a bit, reckon because not hot enough.

Have a non branded electric one here and it's a great weapon.

Extended the electric cable for convenience to 10-12ft.

Plug it in maybe 30minutes before And keep plugged in throughout.

On separate note, thinking of moving to calves this winter. Just wondering when is best time to de-horn calves?

You shouldn't do this. I know a man who got a severe stroke by using this method the ground was a bit damp under them an the current went to his body from the mains the doctors said

Use an RCD plug in adaptor and it will trip if any short circuit.

And do ye normally removed the butt of the horn? or just gouge out the ring around the horn?
The other half does have a few stubs of horns returning on the calves he has done and he normally removes the horn when de-horning. I do love the polly's meself!! :P

Depending on the size of the horn, we try to do them within 3 weeks of birth or 1 week if they have a good tip to them.... No matter the time of year we always use silver spray and a bit of stocktar spray to keep any flies away or the mothers from licking at them!

Mind if I bring this up again to see if anyone has anything else to add? What they feel does the best job?

Have a Portasol 3 gas dehorner for six or seven years now and find it very good.
