08 Golf engine dead

    Hi all,

I need some advice, my car is a 08 1.9l diesel vw golf with 100k miles on the clock.
The car is also registered in NI where I live but the car broke down and is currently in a garage in the South.

Basically, the car brokedown recently and was towed to a garage who have now told me I need a new engine.
They have informed me that a replacemnt engine from a breakers will cost approx €1000 + another €1000 to fit it.

I personally don't want to go down that route as due to my present circumstance I really need a car/engine I can rely on.

I'm thinking the best bet is to just buy a replacement car but what do I do with my current car.
Is the car worth anything without the engine? The rest of the car is in very good repair and has been well looked after.
    What happens now?
Do I just leave the car with the garage to scrap? Do I need to pay anything?

I know I need to talk to the garage again but I really don't know much about cars so would like to have some idea before I ring them.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me,

    Kathleen

Your 08 golf with blown engine still has a reasonable value, so I'd say fix up the garage for diagnosis and advertise the car in damage repairable section of done deal or usedcarsni. Should still be worth 2-3 k

Most likely a bxe 1.9 tdi engine that put a rod out through the block. It's a well-ish known issue.

The fact you're in NI will prob work against you as 2008 mk5 golfs aren't worth a whole pile up there. Selling for "parts or repair" might be your best bet, easiest option anyways but you won't get much for it tbh.

If getting it fixed make sure you get a bkc 1.9tdi bottom end, these came in the earlier mk5 golf and caddy's 2005-7. These have much stronger rods and are way more reliable. The head of your own engine may be salvageable.

Breaking the car and selling parts individually would recoup the most money but it's a fair ordeal and messy etc. So it doesn't suit most.

    Hi Bigus,

Thanks for your advice. My problem is that the car is about 100 miles (2 hours drive) from my home in Northern Ireland. I have no way of transporting the car there myself and limited storage space.

I could leave the car at a firends house in the South which is closer (45 mins drive) but then it is a NI registered car stuck in the South which I imagine would complicate selling it.

Do you have any idea how much transporting the car would cost? I'd like to avoid that if possible to be honest but maybe I'll have no other options.

    Hi Mikey,

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure if I could do this, I don't personally no any mechanics North or South. Wouldn't I have to take the car out of the grage first? I doubt they would let anyone else in to have a look at it first. I'd imagine the engine is in bad nick anyway as it started making loud banging noises and vibrating the whole car while I was doing 120 kph on the motorway. I pulled in straight away but I have no reason to doubt the garage owners (although as I said I know very little about cars).

Thanks for the advice so far guys,

    Kathleen.

Would you be able to get it towed to Kilkenny?

Don't know how good or bad these guys are, just had a quick donedeal search, but it's also half the price that you're being quoted.

A relative of mine had the same happen to her golf. Part of the engine was made from lower grade steel apparently. Got the guy above in Kilkenny for e1000 and is motoring away.

    Thanks for your reply selectamatic,

That is exactly what has happened to it unfortunately.

What would you do if you were me and didn't want to fix it up/ take it home/ have any hassle?

Would it be worth anything and would anybody actually come and take it from the garage? If not what can I do, just ask the mechanic to scrap it? Would I have to pay for that? I definitely don't want to go down the route of selling individual parts or anything like that!

Thanks for all your help so far guys,
    Kathleen

It will be another engine you need if the conrod is out through the block but you won't get one that easy as it is a known problem and engines aren't that plentiful. Ring around as many breakers as you can as an engine(as scarce as they are) can be got for less than 1k euro.

The car is in all likelihood worth repairing, unless it's a complete shed that is.

Whatever engine you get make sure you get the bottom end bearings replaced as this is the root cause of the conrod going through the block. It is most common on bxe engines but it isn't unheard of in other variants either.
