Intern holiday pay

    Hey guys,

    My GF has been doing a paid internship at a company since January, the terrible pay compared to what the other employees earn but that another story.

    Anyway my question is, are paid interns entitled to paid holiday leave? She took a week holiday last week, but her boss told her than she won't be paid for the week she missed. I have been searching online, and it says that 6 month interns have 2 weeks paid annual leave

    Yes she is entitled to paid leave, but the company are not required to continue her internship, so it's her choice.

    Yeah we are being careful, they seem to be interested in making her a permanent employee.

    So we are thinking that she can bring this up when she is a permanent employee. Then it would be unfair dismissal if she was let go?

    No it wouldn't, at the moment she is an intern, not a full time employee. She would not have protection of Unfair Dismissals Act until 12 months of service as an employee. If she is offered full time employment, she will have a probationary period of up to one year during which she can be let go. So, either she fights for her entitlement and risks being let go, or she sucks it up and and hopes for a full time position.

    Jesus interns really are ****ed over. Would the 6 month internship count towards the 1 year probationary period?

    Internships are designed to benefit both parties, the intern gets experience they wouldn't normally get unless they were an employee, the business owner gets cheap labour. In the US interns are unpaid. If your GF feels strongly, then make a stand now, but don't be surprised if the internship ends, employment only starts when the offer of a job materialises and is accepted.
