I would like to try out Johnstone's water based gloss paint which I think is new on the scene. I was told in the paint shop that it flows on well a bit like oil based.
I find some paint dries so fast I simply cant get a really smooth finish.
I'm just wondering if anyone on here has tried it yet.
    Thanks

Waterbased paints aren't a patch on oil based. Although it is expensive, I found Colortrend water based the best of the lot.

I'm a professional painter. First point is I find Johnstone's paint to be poor. 2nd point is I find water based gloss to be absolute rubbish. Go back to the oil based. Buy a product called Owatrol Oil and add it to the paint. It makes the application much smoother and increases the coverage. My own preference is for Dulux satinwood or gloss.

While I agree with you dok, as a once off oil based undercoat and satin is ok, but continual use is not good. I have been trying to get away from oil for a long time for health reasons. A lot of lung cancer with painters. I'm trying to use water based as much as possible. Even if it's not as good, health is more important.

How much Owatrol Oil would you add to say a one litre tin of gloss.
( its better to know from someone who uses it regularly than from an instruction leaflet I think.)

As I'm sure you've found water based dries very fast . Do you use any additive to get the paint to spread easier . I find it hard to paint panel doors in particular because of the fast drying time....

I use a 3 inch synthetic brush, which enables you to quickly paint the panels before the paint dries. With water based paint, the door will require 3 or more coats, so don't paint on heavily. Water based gloss is poor. I only use colortrend water based satin.

    Another one here for Colortrend

Have switched last few years to their satinwood for woodwork and their emulsions

Really good paint and infinite colour choices

I generally add it in a ratio of 10part gloss to 1 part Owatrol Oil.

You can add a product called Flotrol to the water based gloss/satinwood. I find it really good. It makes the paint go on smoother, better coverage and reduces brush/roller marks significantly. If you are struggling with getting the panel doors painted in time, get yourself a 4 inch microfibre roller ( Fleetwood are the best imo). You'll do the door in a fraction of the time and have a much more uniform finish

If you give the surface of whatever you are about to paint a wipe with a damp cloth just before you paint it, it delays the drying time , also I find the sponge brushes good for water based paint. For light sanding before the final coat with water based paint what ye lads use ?, I find Abranet good but it's still difficult to get a finish as good as oil based
