Is this a hornet?

    I took this pic about 30 min ago. It was about 2" long and flew with a whirring sound rather than a buzz. I looked up the European Hornet and this seems larger that the description for the European hornet. Any ideas?

    It's a perfectly harmless Wood Wasp.

    I've been looking into hornets and bees a lot lately and there has been a few cases of suspected giant Japanese hornet sightings in Europe lately, including Ireland. I don't know for sure if that's what you have here, but I'd be interested to know myself
