Getting NCT test early, does result override existing cert?

For example, if my nct runs until January 1St but I decide to test the car early and it fails, is the cert until Jan 1St now no longer valid?

    I'm assuming it isn't.

I'd imagine it's overridden, almost certainly so if its "fail dangerous".

It will still be valid until it expires on the 1st of jan.

    Incorrect.

The original test certificate stays valid even if the vehicle fails an early re-test. However if the vehicle fails dangerous the NCT attach a notice stating this, but the original certificate is still valid.

Though if they slap a sticker on your windscreen for fail dangerous in an early test you must not drive the car no matter what the original in date nct says.

you would be rather irresponsible to drive it and of interest to An Garda Siochana should they get to hear of it, who knows who might phone Garda Confidential?

What can a garda do though if it has a valid nct?

i'd imagine they can book you for driving a dangerous vehicle under any circumstance.

A valid NCT is only good till you drive out of the centre, after that it's up to the operator to make sure it's not dangerous.
Extreme example. Do you think that driving into the kerb when exiting the test centre and knocking a wheel off means that the car isn't dangerous?

Valid NCT and readworthiness are separate matters.
It's illegal to drive without valid NCT, but it's also illegal to drive dangerously defective vehicle even if it's NCTed.

They can't do you for lack of nct is the point I was trying to make, I misread the post I was replying to. I agree with all of the above, of course you could be done for driving a defective vehicle on the road.
