In fairness like how many analogue tv viewers needed "a good installer" ? All they had to do is buy a box or new tv and tune it in themselves

Not sure we can blame Saorview for that.

You might be surprised at the kind of crappy analogue reception people would put up with, especially if their main TV had a subscription service.

The all-or-nothing nature of digital, with effects of poor signal that you can't 'get used to' would have forced them to get a bit of an overhaul if they wanted to continue viewing alternative (Irish) channels on other TVs in the house.

Not sure we can blame Saorview for that.

Well, they created a brand, merely as a stamp of approval for receivers but, seemingly were aware, or were made aware, that certain 'business' types might link it with the public perception of subscription services, with their affiliated installers etc., & it seems they didn't do anything to stop the brand being misused in this way.

"Room for many more channels to come along...."

People were told to spend €85/100 on a saorview approved box so that they'd have digital aertel but now rte want to close aertel, a € 30 basic mepg4 box would have done most people.

Saorview approved boxes were available for far less than €85, & I don't recall seeing too many €30 generic boxes, in shops anyway.

Well, there is. Just no demand.

There is lots of demand, just not for the rubbish that Irish broadcasters would provide.

The reality of UK FTA overspill should have been accepted and a deal done to put the main UK FTA channels on sourview to make it a better service than the one it replaced.

There would be demand if people had any real confidence in saorview, but it's been run as a bare bones system for 5 years, it's largely in horrid, soft SD picture and RTE themselves only seem to be putting up with it's existence as there are some farmers in the midlands without Sky/Virgin/Eir who would phone Liveline. I see the "news channel" is euronews in the evening which doesn't help their cause when trying to find the weather forecast before bedtime.

That would have been great but completely impossible for any number of reasons.

The switchover itself was a success I think, but Saorview is never going to grow in any significant way, there simply isn't a market for it.

If there was a commercial market to be serviced then there would be interested parties.
Obviously there is no perceived market.
