Lack of front licence plate.

Anyone know the punishment for lack of front licence plates ?

Probably in my head but I seem to be seeing a lot more cars without them in the last few weeks, not even on the dash (Cork City and surrounding areas). Maybe the up and coming trend to displace the German Style Plates that were all the rage 3 years ago.

Side Question. Whats the legality of sticking the plate inside the window on the dash?

Vehicle registration plates must be affixed to the front and back of your vehicle and clearly visible at all times. It is not clearly visible when sitting on the dash in the front window.

I recall some mention of €1250-€1500 of a fine for messing around with plates either with none or with fancy italic font.

Don't know the punishment but I had a bumper flushed and had the number plate on the dash for a number of months. Passed through two checkpoints without a word and at the third the Garda recommended I get it sorted for the sake of a quiet life.

Probably helped that I didn't have a daysul straight pipe and a 50" tinted visor :pac:

    Fine is up to €5000.

It is also a fixed penalty charge, but to date no fine amount has been prescribed under such.

I have passed a car on my way to work for the last 6+ months, its a 15 or 15 Octavia with no front plate.
Doesn't seem to matter much in some places and I doubt that the woman driver is doing it to look cool.

the operative word is "affixed" , apparently the plate must be secured to the vehicle , thus one on the dash won't do, but it's like so many other Laws, it isn't enfroced to any discernable degree.

No use of the word "affixed" in law, just "exhibited" and "easily distinguishable" are the key words.

    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/1992/si/318/made/en/print
9 (7) Subject to the provisions of subparagraph (8), the identification mark of a vehicle shall be exhibited, in the case of a vehicle which has only one front wheel, on the back of the vehicle and, in the case of any other vehicle, on the front of and on the back of the vehicle in a vertical or nearly vertical position, so that every letter or figure of the identification mark is vertical or nearly vertical and is easily distinguishable, in the case of the letters and figures placed on the front of the vehicle, from in front of the vehicle and in the case of the letters and figures placed on the back of the vehicle, from behind the vehicle.

    (8) Where one or more trailers of any kind are attached to a vehicle, a duplicate of the identification mark of the vehicle shall be exhibited on the back of the rearmost trailer in the manner that the identification mark is required to be exhibited on the back of the vehicle.

Well, actually a speed camera van is capable of getting both the front and rear number plates.

Only on one direction, if ending towards it, the cameras on the back door of van and if have no number plate , there's no camera set up on front of van as i pass it, now if im driving on other side of road then it will take picture of back of me with number plate.

I was always 100% sure that there was a camera on the front??

I drove a car without a front plate for about 6-7 months a few years back. I was stopped twice and on both occasions I told them I was just replacing the plate surround. They didn't seem too bothered over it, they showed an interest in the car and one mentioned that he could see why I left it off but rules are rules. It just looked so much better without the front plate and I didn't get too much hassle over it so it was left without one for a while.

    How do they work?

In a nutshell there is a person inside viewing a camera. The camera is linked to a radar system and based on this radar system they can work out a vehicles speed. The system can work with the car going towards and away from the rear doors

    I stand corrected! :)

I wonder who has a german style plate...

Or the gobsh1te I was behind last week with a yellow rear reg plate with the wrong font in his 08 WW van. The front also had an illegal number plate as well as post-market yellow fog lights (on, naturally, on a clear blue morning). Of course it would have helped if his pride and joy had more than one brake light also in operation...
