Brakes - NCT Pass / Service fail!

Hi all. I had my 2011 CMax in for the NCT 8 weeks ago and passed with flying colours. I've just had my annual service and been told I need 4 new brakes, apparently 90% worn at front, 80% worn at rear! Is it not slightly unusual to get through the NCT in this condition?

By saying brakes worn I assume you mean break pads.

In short break pads normally provide full breaking performance till the very end. So they could be 99% worn and still provide full breaking performance therefore pass Nct.
It's just once they will reach 100% wear you'll notice decreased braking performance and metal to metal rubbing which can in longer run destroy your discs and callipers.

In short scenario you are describing is very possible.

Understood! yes, the pads were badly worn. Many thanks.

Calipers? The caliper remains in contact with the same parts of the pad. The amount of heat remains the same (although the ratio at which it is release is slowed down)...

I honestly don't see why calipers could get hurt...

    You're right. Calipers wouldn't. I don't know what was I thinking.
