Probably a stupid question lads, but when you are coming out of Connolly towards Drumcondra you can see a line that takes a sharp turn to the left along the canal on the south side. Where would this line have gone and when was it last used would anyone know?

It's not dead, it's the Newcommen curve. It connects to the line to Docklands station. It's still used fairly regularly, I think for empty trains from Docklands sometimes, and if the line through Drumcondra is closed for whatever reason, trains from Maynooth/Sligo can access Connolly using this line.

I learned a long time ago that there is no such thing as a stupid question!!

The 08:00 Connolly-Sligo departs from P7 and uses the curve every day.

About 20 years ago I was working in that area and saw them installing or replacing the lifting bridge over the canal on that line just at the junction to the docks area. Not sure if the bridge was ever raised for canal traffic but would be really interested if anyone has any knowledge of its use.

You can see the bridge being raised in Dick Warners travel along the Royal Canal :)

On average there are 10 lifts annually.

Thanks for the link and information. It must be one of the very few opening rail bridges still operational in Ireland. The only other one I can think of is the Bann Bridge in Coleraine. It was refurbished a few years ago as part of the Derry line upgrade.
