New car - €35K budget

OK, looking to tap into the collective wisdom of this forum

Been driving a banger for years which is now giving up the ghost - am in the fortunate position of having up to €40K max. to spend on a replacement (been saving for years so consider it delayed gratification !) - so what to do ?

Been thinking about going for a 142/151 era BMW/Merc/Audi thereby dodging the major depreciation element when purchasing new.

Alternatively, I could go brand new on something smaller/cheaper but am conscious that I'd be funding mainly the depreciation element unless I hold onto whatever I buy for 6-8 years (or even longer) and get the max value out of it

    I'm brand-agnostic i.e. I'll consider anything though I do want a diesel (for the mileage I do) and something at least 1.6L / 130BHP

    All and any suggestions welcome...............thanks.

The depreciation of €35k car will be very similar, regardless if it is a brand new Passat or 3 year old premium. If any difference was to be seen, it is the popular car (with lower maintenance costs and 3 years longer lifespan before insurance classify it as too dangerous) that would depreciate less than the premium car.

How much daily do you drive? Maybe it is worth waiting to 181 and get a new Leaf that will be getting close to 300km of range with all toys and whistles?

Daily mileage fluctuates but I'd do approx 25K per annum - made up of a mix of 60K commute, short "around town" driving, and some longer hauls including UK

Not sure I'm ready for a full electric yet - though that's probably just a pyschological thing for now..................as such cars start to proliferate, I'll probably move towards them also (I'm not an early adopter !)

    BMW 430D M-Sport - I could do you a deal :D:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 796 ✭✭✭jrar

I was actually looking at the 520d or the M-Sport - not as enamoured with the 4-series !

If you didnt have your heart set on a premium brand you'd get a Octavia vRS within your budget. You could also consider an ST-Line or Titanium Mondeo 180bhp ?

If you wanted to go the second hand route then maybe something like a GTD Golf or Focus ST diesel.

Go to the UK and get more for your money. If you don't fancy going over yourself you could use an import site who will do the work for you.

    shocking...I'd pick a 430D over a 520D all day except for the brats :D
I drove one of the new 5 series today and its a real step up from the F10..the interior is far more luxurious and the 2litre engine is pretty nice ..and Im coming from a 3litre f10.
35K would get you a 161 520D or a 151 520D M Sport...trying to get one with sat nav ie the large screen is a bitch though..

+1 for the Octavia Vrs. serious machine

I'd go for a 5 series m sport personally, with a good spec.

Yeah, that's where I'm at now I think. Just trying to get the right balance between spec versus age in terms of what represents best value for money

35k will get you a new Skoda superb with good spec. It's what I ordered a while ago, waiting on delivery in a few weeks

I was looking at this 520 M Sport Plus, the guy is very genuine and the car is absolutely immaculate. I was wishfully thinking I could fit 3 child seats in the back but to no avail, so family wagon for me! The colour combo is beautiful. I think he's not badly priced for the M Sport Plus.

Tesla Model 3, think there is a waiting list though but could be wrong

Get yourself another banger for the time being if the wait isn't too long

If it was me and I waited as long as the OP driving a banger and saving up for a nice car, I'd buy something for about 4-5k now which I could sell on in 2019 for about 2-3k and put my name down on the list for the Tesla.

They look the dogs b*llox IMO

I think tesla are going to be caught by manufacturers with better manufacturing capacity and able to roll the machines out more efficiently. That said very impressed with what tesla are doing. Saw my very first one today I think it was a model S and it looked lovely.

Tesla model 3, so beautiful. I am figuring out how long I have to save for a tesla myself at the moment, been driving an EV since the start of 2015, and I can't stomach changing the second family car for anything other than another EV. Getting in a diesel feels like going to work on a horse!

How about Lexus IS300h, circa 60mpg, €40k new.

    Me too

All about the power for me

Model 3 goes like a race car compared to your average 520d, A4 TDi

Electric power is going to shake this up so much

Traditionaly quick diesel cars like Octavia vrs etc will have doors blown off them by Model 3 etc

Even the new Leaf ( 150bhp) would leave you average 2.0TDi for dead

Had one for a while, great car but the suspension began to annoy me. It would have been grand is I was younger but as I hit my mid 30's, I like a bit for of a smoother journey.

    Jaguar XE looks nice.
    Getting good reviews online.
Been advertised at 0% pcp deal at the moment.
Seems to have a nice mix of comfort, performance and economy.

Brand new Merc CLA 180 (1.5).

Is in that budget. Great looking car. Good fuel economy.

New VW eGolf....35k on the nose will get you one.

I have one, but the older model....you really have to drive one.....Tesla is too far off for everyone

eGolf is best electric car out at the moment unless you spend 80k

Depending on your daily mileage, a Hyundai Ioniq electric. Lots of happy owners on Boards, myself included!

You will get them really cheap from the UK as no one wants them over there any more. Only problem is no one will want them here in 2 years time either.

"Impossible" I said to myself as I penned up a sneering post before googling it.

The XE is a nice car , buy not if you carry passengers regularly the back seats are very cramped.

Really poor quality interior though. Paint finish is not the best standard either and diesel engines are noisy. A lot of this is glanced over by jingoistic magazines such as Autocar.
