Driving Licence Expired and Out Of Date - query.

I just realised this evening my 10 year driving licence is out of date for the last 2 weeks.

I'm going to look to have this rectified ASAP but do I risk penalty points if I'm driving with an out of date licence in the time it takes for it to be renewed? It was a genuine error on my part -I'm sure everyone says that but in this case it was!

Mods - apologies if this is in the incorrect thread, feel free to move if required.

no penalty points for an expired licence. At one point you had 10 years after it expired to get it renewed. Not 100% sure if this is still the case.

HOWEVER if you have penalty points on that licence the clock for those stops when the licence expires and does not restart until the licence is renewed. So if you do currently have penalty points then get it renewed quick.

You don't risk penalty points for driving on an expired licence, but you do risk a summons, court appearance, conviction and fine.

    Thanks for the replies!

    No penalty points thankfully.

Are there any insurance implications to driving with an out of date licence that anyone is aware of?

Have an appointment secured for tomorrow in Trim (nothing in Dublin for ages) so will hopefully be sorted by tomorrow.

I'm reasonably confident that your insurance will be valid as long as you held a valid licence when you last renewed the policy, and you haven't been disqualified or anything like that. But check with your insurer, would be the safest course.

Am I right in thinking that the document expires, not the licence? The licence being the file held in Shannon?

    Correct.

My licence categories have no expiry date but the card has an administrative expiry date.

Unless 10 years have passed without renewal in which case it does expire.

As a matter of interest, how many times have you been asked by the Gardai to produce your driving licence since your last renewal i.e. during the 10 years the last licence was valid for?

    Once.

I know the chances are minimal at best, but trust me, knowing my luck I'd have been asked when it was out of date!

Make an appointment with your local National Driver Licence Service centre (www.ndls.ie). Bring a completed application form D401 (available online on the NDLS website), your current licence, proof of PPSN and if your address has changed from that on your current licence, proof of current address.

Just FYI, you can walk in as well. I looked online for an appointment for my local NDLS centre and it was 5 days later. Chanced my arm and walked in the next morning at around 10 in the morning and there was no queue and they took me straight away. I was in and out in under 15 minutes. They don't seem to give many morning appointments.

Not in Dublin! I know of someone who tried this recently and they were there over 4 hours. Hence why I went to Trim.....

Probably just depends on the centre! The one I was in said they're never busy first thing in the morning. I can imagine the Dublin ones being busy though.

Wicklow is good - I got a walk in there early on a Saturday morning recently no problems. They advised it is usually quite quiet there.
