    Hi
Only in last 2 weeks my amarok has been loosing coolant ( known problem with vw diesels) and have had to top it up twice , looking to me like egr cooler fooked and coolant being lost out through exhaust through faulty egr cooler , jeep out of warranty and of course typically im in Kerry on hols! Question is it better to get egr cooler removed, egr blanked and pipes re-routed ecu re programmed ?

I'd talk to a VW dealer, particularly if you have a main dealer history, you should look for a contribution for replacement from VW.

Thanks , yea was going to bring it up to divanes tmw to see what they say , just heard a few stories of the cooler being replaced and the same issue coming up again soon after - hence my reasoning on removal rather than replacing . I'll talk to vw tmw . It has main dealer history up til last year ( when warranty ran out ) since then I have services myself ..
    Thanks for advice toyotafanboi

You didn't have the diesel emissions fix done right?

I actually never got the letter ( bought Car in 2014 from N.I vw main dealer) so I'm not sure - I don't think i have though, would they automatically advise this was done at service ? Bear in mind I got last vw service in 2016 , this would have been last dealer service...I have serviced myself since out of warranty

I don't think the Amarok was affected by the update. Are you going back to the dealer that sold it?

What has coolant leak to do with the emission fix?!

They're both related to the EGR system, in this instance.

Why are you recently attacking what i post?
There are stories of the emissions fix causing issues with the egr coolant.
Calm your tits in the future.

    Was that an attack?

Nevertheless there is no personal vendetta here, don't worry. Only posts that don't make sense.

EGR valve, not exhaust cooler itself.

EGR works by letting some of the exhaust gases back into the intake manifold and then to cyllinders. That reduces the oxygen content in the mixture and make it burn in lower temperature, which massively reduced NOx. Unfortunately, the exhaust gases are to hot to go directly into the intake manifold, they need to be cooled down before.

The fix changes the strategy of the EGR, which is worked much harder and fails. There is nothing in the fix that would accelerate the exhaust gases cooler to leak though.

Now probably I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that for e.g.. in the golf the egr and cooler failed after the emissions fix.
I'd have to look again where I read this.
Nevertheless it was just an idea that came to me.
The op hasn't had it done so my idea is out.
About the posts, looking back it looked to me that whenever I post something in the motors forum you're there to criticise it. Nothing to do with being right or wrong. If you feel I'm wrong then explain why and not hit back with a ?!

The problem with 1.6 TDI is that the EGR valve is not a separate part and whole assembly, with the cooler, needs to be replaced. That's where the confusion came from.

    Ah the 1.6.
I've taken a quick look at an Audi.co.uk forum and there are 2.0 also suffering from the same issue so it isn't prone only to the 1.6.
In any case, this isn't the pos issue.
Take it back to the dealer op

You're right - the 2.0 uses same parts...

Just to follow up on this ..VW main dealer where I got the jeep serviced regularly while under warranty won't entertain dealer contribution, their price €1100.00 . George Dalton €750 OEM parts.
The dealer really couldn't have given less of a ****e on the phone even when I pointed out that I was looking at the V6 version in their showroom 2 weeks ago with a view to trading in at end of the year and even had the trade in details printed out by sales guy.. recession is over lads - rejoice !

Well at the same time, it is out of warranty and you did service it yourself last year, so it's swings and roundabouts. Maintaining a history can make or break these deals at times. You may be genuine, but everybody is "thinking of buying a new one", when looking for bargaining leverage when the old one breaks down, unfortunately.

Yep I agree and I'm sure everyone uses the line and the dealers hear it everyday but I most certainly was there, have the paperwork and also as a business owner myself would always look after a customer if they had a valid issue , I have honoured warranties on quite expensive products that I sell that have long expired because I have a good relationship with my customers and would also like to retain the business , I can tell the chancers from the genuine guys and the genuine ones are the ones you need to keep , to be honest a token gesture like free oil & filter service or refunding half the price of the egr if or when I take the trade in offer would suffice - to me its black and white and a win for the dealer - he gets the sale on the new jeep and I feel I've gotten some sort of customer satisfaction , car sales are apparently down in the last few months so what gives? At €1100 they can surely discount and still make money and keep customer happy ... getting a customer is easy, keeping them is the hard part IMO.

Well it is 2 years out of warranty at the same time, not two months and there's a fine line between satisfying a customer and becoming a charity too as I'm sure you understand. It's be handy out to keep customers if businesses kept dishing out the freebies.

If a customer bought an item from you brand new and maintained it religiously with you, you might feel more compelled to do them a favour than if they bought the same item from you, done the minimum maintenance required to keep the warranty intact and then disappeared to a cheaper supplier as soon as possible afterwards.

Sounds like you've fallen on the wrong side of it unfortunately but it was certainly worth a punt on your end. Maybe if you retained the service history they would have viewed it differently, this can be a huge factor in goodwill offerings in situations like these.

How any ever, the dealers loss is George's gain in this instance.

Well I've had the vehicle three years and it's a 131 reg so it's only a year out of warranty according to VW( 3 year warranty) Also they have all the service history as it was maintained by a vw main dealer here by me for two of the last 3 years I have owned it and for the first year of it's life the previous owner got it serviced by a N.I VW dealer ( Agnews) service log book full of vw stamps
That's what is annoying , if it was two years out of warranty I'd be fine with it or spurious service records by non vw dealer during warranty period.
I just think it's poor customer service and having spoken to others there appears to be issues with egr coolers in this engine but just because they haven't issued a recall it's tough luck for the customer
Bottom line is If I do decide to trade it won't be with this dealer and to be honest this is the second less than pleasant experience with VW dealers in Dublin - 2 separate dealers same crap customer service.
But as I said if they were being smart they could have offered a carrot in the form of a free service or rebate of part of the egr cost if I traded in, that's what I would do and it would mean that they aren't giving out discounts to everyone and it would sort out the genuine from the chancers.
But as you say George wins and I'm glad to be giving the business to someone who obviously has a good reputation
