So after a lot of searching for the misses we are close to pushing the button on a 2016 Skoda Superb from the UK. 1.4Tsi ACT DSG with 17,000 miles. It ticks 95% of the boxes.

The only problem is due the UK VW/Skoda sh1tty warranty (3rd year is UK only) it will only have a warranty for the next 9 months or so. Buying the car from a main dealer so there are no questions marks on the car.

Would this put you off the car or should we take our chances?

Can you buy a warranty here to add extra cover?

An option might be the North. I bought a Peugeot from the UK, Peugeot dealer in the North said he'd cover the 3rd year before I bought the car. Same recently with a Merc, work was carried out in a dealer just over the border.

Skoda and VW have 3 year warranties here since about 2012, I'd double check if the 3rd year of the UK warranty is not valid here.

If getting to the North is practical then a Skoda dealer up there will cover the last 12 months of the warranty.

The third year isn't valid here.

I'd like more than 9 months warranty on what is probably a €30k ish investment, personally.

Is there nothing similar in Irish dealers or is it an exercise in cost saving? An Irish main dealer would see you with 24 months warranty on that car, regardless of the expiration date of the manufacturers warranty.

Those third party aftermarket warranties aren't worth the paper they are written on. I'd steer clear of those.

Strange that a car manufacturer will not cover one of their products outside of the Country where its purchased.....I have had to date 3 Skodas, 2 Octavia's and 1 Superb. In the booklet supplied with the car, it lists all the dealerships in the EU where you can get help if you have a problem. Also in the family, we have had other Octavias ( x 2) plus a Roomster. This Roomster has in excess of 350'000 Klms covered without any major repair costs ( normal servicing only) and is in everyday use.
So I would have no hesitation in buying this car, assuming that you are making a good saving over an Irish purchased car.
Good Luck what ever you do,
    Jim

The car is costing around €23k, nothing here with that spec comes close, there are zero petrol dsg's here from what I can see. I've been told by Skoda that once the car is re-registered the year 3 UK warranty is void.

The manufacturer provides the first two years of the warranty and they will honour it in any European country.

The local distributor provides the third year, which is why the third year is only valid in the same country as it was originally purchased.

You won't see VW Ireland paying for component failures on a car supplied by VW UK or vice versa. Similarly both will be happy to wash their hands of a car if it leaves their region.

Re. standard and configuration, that I can well believe. All of the Skoda's we have had are diesels though ( but petrol or EV looms large on the horizon) and I can honestly say, we have never had any major mechanical ( or other) problems with any of them. I presume that there is full Skoda dealership service history with it? This would be very important for me if I were buying this car.

According to Skoda UK website there is a 12 month MANUFACTURERS warranty on all approved used cars. Are you buying through the dealer network - ask to see the booklet on that warranty and see if there are any territorial restriction. This will be separate to any warranty offered (by manufacturer or distributor) at time of sale when new.

I had a UK imported VW CC a few years back and had work carried by VW UK up in Belfast in the third year of the warranty. VW UK had no issue with the car being on Irish plates for the warranty claim as long as I could get it to a dealer in the North, good thing too as they had to replace the gearbox, clutch plate and flywheel with only 65k km on the clock. VW Ireland were willing to pay for the parts but it still would have cost €1500 in labour down here.

Yeah, there'll be no hassle if you take the car back to the UK on Irish plates to have the work done but it is a pain in the backside for most to do that, particularly if it's an unpredictable/ sudden failure.

You could still get a manufacturer goodwill offering in another region which sounds like what you were offered but that's a lottery i wouldn't like to be depending on.

Yeah, I had to drive 4 hours to Belfast with a gearbox that had an oil leak that was causing the clutch to start slipping too. I had to stay a couple of nights while they sorted it out but it was still a lot cheaper than spending €1500 down here.

That's great to know lads, not the most convenient but a bit of a safety net.

I suppose another way of looking at it is the money you save my importing can be put towards any repairs that may arise later on.
