E46 320d burning thin oil?

Have a 320d with 130k on the clock. Oil had been changed prior to me buying it, so I put about 6/7k on it before deciding to change it. The oil level never dropped a fraction in that first 7k.

I then bought 5L of 5w 30 fully synth as per the recommended spec and after about 4k miles I got an oil light on the dash. Checked the dipstick and it was down to below minimum level.

So, from looking around, some are recommending 5w 40 which will still be thin in cold weather but thicker at operating temps, so shouldn't result in burning. Will this work, or should a diesel with this mileage now be put on 10w40?

** sorry just realized this should be in DIY - maybe a mod could move it. Thanks
