He was off for 3 weeks and returned on Monday last week but was only on for 4 days and seems to have disappeared again. I assume he is unwell and perhaps his 3 weeks off weren't for holiday purposes. I enjoy listening to him when I get a chance. Hopefully he will return soon.

Sadly his show has been on the endangered species list for over 10 years, Ana leddy wanted to drop him in 2006 and give Tubs 2 hours but he had just signed an new 3 yr contract the month before she became pd.

    A. He's an employee not on a contract. B. His ratings are consistently good so I doubt they'd move him.

He certainly isn't an employee, he is a contractor like the rest of the class of 79, larry, Fanning, marty

shay byrne who was filling in for ronan last week said late last week that he was talking to him and was 'feeling good'.

so he must be recovering from something.

The show has never been better than when he doesn't present it. He's dire.

I've nothing against Ronan personally but there's only so much Frank Sinatra and dean Martin a person can take. They've gone with Tubs and Darcy to draw 40 - 50 age group to Radio 1. I'd say it's only a matter of time before they drop Ronan for someone younger.

I'd take Ronan over Tubs and D'Arcy any day. He may indulge in Beach Boys and two Beatle tracks in a row but it beats talking sh!te about porridge, running and celebrity babies.

Hope Ronan is okay. Not his greatest fan, but judging by the jnlr figures, he has plenty of them.

Recovering from an operation on his back.

Most of the music on his show is requested by listeners of which he has many.

I'm lost. I know next Wednesday is Leaving Certs Results day but 1977?? What's that about? The 40th anniversary of day he started in the pirates? Or something else?

You dont know the significance of that date?

I guess that's The Wonder of You.

Personally speaking, it's Always on My Mind.

I like Ronan but, at the same time, I welcome Carol Moran getting another stint. She was excellent on The Weekend On One last year.

Ronan should just record a batch of shows in advance , throw in a few fake birthdays and anniversary greetings in amongst the playlist and bobs your uncle , no one would be any the wiser .His show hasn't changed in Donkeys years .

"RTÉ Radio One's Ronan Collins has spoken about the the health scare which left him paralysed from the waist down, caused by a benign cyst which was subsequently removed in a successful operation.

In an interview with the Sunday World, the 64-year old radio presenter recalled the loss of sensation in his legs. A benign cyst pressing against spinal nerves was found to be the cause of the paral."

Sounds serious, good to hear he is recovering. Not sure if he is back tomorrow.

I read somewhere that RTE are making a programme about it. Something like when Aine Lawlor had cancer.

I don't . It could have been on some of the new season schedule announcements.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,877 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

I suppose it's unlikely he will be doing Dancing With the Stars.

The music and presentation was so much better without him. I had gone back to tuning in but will be going elsewhere now.

I'm not a fan of Ronan Collins' programme at all, I think the i-pod shuffle resemblance which someone once mentioned, is pretty apt.

Awful to hear of his recent illness though. Anything like paralysis is profoundly frightening to experience. So in spite of my previous comments, it's good to see him getting back into action.

    Late Late Show tomorrow night.

Broadcaster Ronan Collins was getting ready to host an event recently when he lost power in one of his legs. His story is captured in the upcoming RTÉ2 series Trauma..

Good old RTE, double whammy of a canteen guest with bonus obscure health issue.

Ronan Collins showing his black sense of humour today by playing Elvis Presley's 'Paralyzed', in reference to his appearance on the Late Late Show.

Michael Cahill is sitting in for Ronan Collins for the next few weeks. Hope they don't keep Cahill on that slot...
